First AG Brewday 08/04/07 - Rule Britannia!

Post by maxashton » Sun Apr 08, 2007 11:27 am

Hi guys!

Very excited. Brewing an old Mild recipe based on one posted by SteveD, and shamelessly chopped up by PieOPah and myself.

My best mate is here to help me move things, take pictures, and whatever else!

Could be interesting 8)

You're using 500g less pale malt than I did yesterday and I ended up with OG 1075. 50% efficiency is too low I would think.

Good luck :)

Either i get the 1075 i was originally expecting, or i make a pigs ear out of it. Either way i get something drinkable!

Is that correctable? If you aim high and hit very low, you end up with something which either has the right amount of hoppiness, but lower alcohol than expected and I assume less flavour, since extraction is low. Or you'll get less volume, the right amount of flavour and alcohol, but far too much bitterness. If it's too bitter, I'll find it undrinkable.

On the other hand, you aim low and hit high the hopping will be too low - can you improve this by adding a 'hop extract' from boiling in water or a DME wort?

We just sparged! letting it sit for a minute, then going to boil..

I think that was what I was looking for - making a hop tea if the efficiency turned out to be higher than expected
DaaB wrote:In your case you are loosing a certain amount of efficiency due racking off the sediment (as do I). This won't be effecting the hop balance though as you have already added them.
Not sure this follows - if I'm getting 1042 instead of 1049 OG, then don't I get a corresponding reduction in flavour from the malt? Or is the recipe based on not racking off the sediment until after primary fermentation? (and so not watering down the resultant volume)

Sorry for hijacking your thread, MA! Hope it's all going ok.

Looking forward to hearing the full account of your day. No doubt by now the boil will fully be underway if not already finished?

My boiler just packed in.
I was in here a minute ago, and it was bubbling away merrily, come back and it's packed in.

Bit annoyed.

Tried changing the fuse & checking your circuit breakers? Have you got anything else plugged into the same sockets?

That sounds like the problems I have. With too high a gravity, just as the boil gets going the element cuts out.

I have tried taking it apart but can't see anything that would help me out :(
