First AG Brewday 08/04/07 - Rule Britannia!
Sorry for missing posts. My internent connection keeps dropping out. Router is hanging. Will have to replace it.
In any case, the brewday wasn't too successful. Though my mash was pretty efficient, i didn't sparge enough, so didn't get much wort. Had to dilute to make up 19 litres, and only got 1040 gravity. Pitched yeast after aerating, will take more pics soon.

Well done for making the jump to grain brewing.
Regarding sparging, a good rule of thumb is to use a volume of spage liquor equal to your batch size (brewlength). That should ensure good extraction and a minimum of topping up at the end. So, if you are looking for 24L of beer, use 24L sparge liquor. This presupposes that your boiler has the capacity to handle say 24L sparge, plus 5-10L first wort runoff (10-15L in the tun, but 5L retained by an average 5Kg mash), plus headroom to cope with the foam up, say a 50L boiler.

Now I remember why I couldn't remove the safety switch....
The center screw that I need to remove to get to it is worn away so I can't remove it! All attempts have worn it even more making it impossible.
Oh well. My choices are to
a) live with it and it's cut outs
b) get a new element
c) source a kettle element and try that out

Got a kettle from Morrisons. Got the element out and now have no idea how I am going to get this added to my boiler!
The 3 pins are too short for a 'kettle lead' although they do happily fit on the base... Perhaps some form of modification is needed - haven't the time to try and work that out yet though!
