BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
down to my last few bottles of BIAB #1 "Something Peculier", so I'm going to brew some more. Mash & boil today, then leave the boiler overnight (band practice later so I have to interrupt anyway); strain into FV #7 pitch yeast tomorrow night after work
19 litre recipe: OG 1058, FG 1015 (suggested. let's see how close I get) 5.7% ABV
4510g pale malt
245g crystal malt
175g chocolate malt
mash 90 mins at 66C
24g challenger, 12g Fuggles for 90mins
12g Goldings for last 10 mins
dry hop with a few cones of Bobek
Safale-04 - probably not Theakston's choice of yeast but it's all I've got

Let us know how that one gets on.
I`m really keen to find an OP recipe that`s near to the real thing.
Paul.

Re: BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
this is the second time I've done this recipe; the first time I brewed it was my first BIAB and it was a total success
I bottle all my beers now for various reasons, but one of them is to make it easy to compare to the real thing (no, not that real thing!)
I thought it was very similar to draught OP at first (quite strong liquorice flavour), but as it's maturing it's getting very close to the bottled version. Highly recommended. This is a recipe I will brew again and again.
in fact, I think I'll put one in the fridge right now

Re: BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
Sounds just what I`m after. Still using kits at the minute but I`m thinking of going over to BIAB and this would make a great start.
Will probably half everything as I only have an 11 ltr stockpot just now. Either way my mouths wet just thinking about it.
Thanks,
Paul.

Re: BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
my 32 litre pot was only £65. Plus a mashing & sparging bag at £9; other than that, I already had everything i need, equipment wise, and I guess most kit brewers will have too.
I wrap the pot in towels when I dough in, it only drops 2-3 degC over 90 minutes.
And ingredients will almost certainly work out cheaper than say a 2 can kit - ok hops are £4-£5 a pack, but you get more than one brew out of a pack. It's only when you have a complicated recipe with say 3 or 4 different hops that the initial outlay can seem a bit steep, but as said, you don't use them all in one go.
Example, this recipe, ingredients from my LHBC are as follows:
pale malt £1.70 per kg = £7.67
chocolate malt £0.99 per 500g = £0.35
crystal malt £0.99 per 500g = £0.49
hops £5 per 100g pack = (0.24 * 5) + (0.12 * 5) + (0.12 * 5) = £2.40
yeast £2.60
total cost of ingredients = £13.51 (plus a few Styrian Goldings cones)
next purchase will be a wort chiller so I don't have to wait overnight to pitch my yeast

Re: BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
Sounds good.
My 11 ltr stockpot is small enough to fit in the kitchen sink and I just fill the sink and let the tap trickle steadly so that the water warmed by the pot exits the sink via the overflow. It`s not the fastest way in the world but it works for me at the moment.
Roll on Tuesday, pocket money day!
May seem a silly question but do all the grains need to be crushed?
Paul.

Yes they do, but normally they come that way anyway, unless you specify otherwise. In the UK anyway

I got mine from my local shop in Morley, south of Leeds, but it's also available online at http://www.brewuk.com
Brupaks 32l stainless steel pan with tap and hop strainer in the "all grain equipment" section

Re: BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
It's a stove top job, no heating element of its own. Takes a while to get up to temp on the cooker but you could also buy a propane burner to speed things up (and brew outdoors or in the garage)

Thanks for that, it seems quite good value as it comes with a hop strainer and a drain off valve.john_drummer wrote:I got mine from my local shop in Morley, south of Leeds, but it's also available online at http://www.brewuk.com

Re: BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
Yeah, it's ready to use. All you need other than this is a BIAB bag, a thermometer and your ingredients
Re: BIAB #5 - GW Old Peculier clone
and it's bottled. 34x 500ml bottles to go with the 32x 500ml bottles of Old Heckled Spen & 38x 500ml bottles of Coopers Euro Lager.
Soon to be joined by another 34-36 bottles of cascade pale ale.
need. more. bottles.
