Urgent advice needed. Reseal element YN

Post by jmc » Sat Mar 03, 2012 2:44 pm

Hi

My boiler element started smoking after just starting AG46 today.
Ex tea-urn. Buffalo 27L boiler. 3Kw. Model J520. I got it second hand in July 2010.

There was an odd smell then small amount of smoke started to issue from base of boiler while I was using boiler for cereal mash at only 40C

It looks like some mash leaked down side of element and burned there. :x

I've cleaned it all up and I'm wondering if I can (temporarily) refit element using some sealant between element and rubber gasget.
It looked like there was a putty / thermal paste between gasket and element.

I was thinking of using Fernox LSX? Would that be OK?

Looking at Fernox LS-X website
Its product sheet says
* Ideal for use on compression joints and screwed fittings
* Never sets rock hard, joints can easily be undone
* Ready to use, no mixing
* Does not shrink or crack with age
* Suitable for use from below freezing point to above boiling point of water
* Completely safe to use with drinking water
* WRAS – Approved Product
Product
At some stage I'm probably going to need a new element.

Cheapest replacement elementis over £62.99 +VAT = £75.58 :(

Anyone know of cheaper suppliers?

TIA for advice. This is going to be a long day...

I'm sure that LS-X would be safe enough food wise. I don't know if it would work temperature wise - but i suspect the edge of the element wouldn't get 'much' hotter than the water and LS-X is fairly good so its definately worth a try. Obviously it doesn't dry instantly though, so not so good for emergency repairs, perhaps.

Cheers

Hi

Thanks for the advice.

I cleaned everything up and resealed with LSX. I left it 2 hours to set in a warm room and then pressed on with the brew.

45 mins into the boil as I tap. I'll update later. Must dash...
