Too much Aurora??
Too much Aurora??
Hey guys.
I have a pack of Aurora and a couple of bits and bobs of grain that I want to use up and have come up with the following recipe...
Aurora Ale
Brew length: 25l
Original Gravity (OG): 1.049 (°P): 12.1
Final Gravity (FG): 1.012 (°P): 3.1
Alcohol (ABV): 4.81 %
Colour (SRM): 8.0 (EBC): 15.8
Bitterness (IBU): 27.4 (Average)
86.37% Maris Otter Malt
6.91% Carabelge
3.84% Wheat Malt
2.88% Crystal
20g Aurora (8.6% Alpha) @ 60 Minutes (Boil)
40g Aurora (8.6% Alpha) @ 10 Minutes (Boil)
40g Aurora (8.6% Alpha) @ 0 Minutes (Boil)
Single step Infusion at 66°C for 90 Minutes. Boil for 90 Minutes
Fermented at 20°C with Danstar Nottingham
Never having used Aurora before I am unsure if I am overdoing it by trying to use up the whole pack in this style of beer..any takers?
Cheers!
Jim

Re: Too much Aurora??
It'll be fine, if it was one of my beers it'd probably have even more.
In or near Norwich? Interested in meeting up monthly to talk and drink beer? PM me for details.
Re: Too much Aurora??
Cheers Keith1664. This will be next brew up - hopefully this coming weekend.

Thanks Mysterio. Unfortunately I just have the one pack but I do have the following:
Fuggles
Challenger
Celeia
Savjinski Goldings
Columbus
Rakau
Cascade
Amarillo
Tettnang
Northern Brewer
Bramling Cross
Nelson Sauvin
Galena
Willamette
Aurora (Super Styrian)
Citra
Saaz
Delta
Care to suggest one? When and how much?

Re: Too much Aurora??
I would stick with the Aurora, nice on its own, and enough of it in the recipe to give a good impression.
Re: Too much Aurora??
That's exactly the hop timing schedule i would use with 100g of Aurora.
Re: Too much Aurora??
Wanted to brew this yesterday but a successful nagging campaign by SWMBO meant I postponed it until today.
Bit a broken brewday. I had to do the mash earlier this afternoon and then I have left the wort in the kettle until I can do the boil after the kids are put to bed. Hope it still turns out okay. The Aurora hops smell amazing!

Re: Too much Aurora??
That will be no problem at all. Did you notice Aurora are quite a bit dark greener than other hops too?
Re: Too much Aurora??
Yes the hops were a vivid green and still are as they roll around in the boil.
This should be my last BIAB brew if I can get my arse into gear and buy the bits for the manifold to go in the coolbox mash tun. I am looking forward to a whole new learning curve with sparging etc.

Re: Too much Aurora??
Bottled this one after two and a half weeks in FV which is longer than I usually leave it but other things took priority....
I crash cooled it at 5C for a few days beforehand although I don't usually do this especially with Nottingham but my previous pale ale using US-05 (which bounces around the bottles) got me wanting a very clear beer this time round. And that is what I am getting by the looks of things I checked the one clear glass bottle that I used and the beer is a beautiful amber colour, really clear and with a light dusting of yeast at the bottom of the bottle.

Re: Too much Aurora??
Did you take a taste?
I saw on the least favourite hops thread that there was a handful of people who hated Aurora. I can't understand this!

Re: Too much Aurora??
I had a sip when I was bottling but made the mistake of doing so after I batch primed and even with just 60g of sugar in there I could taste the sweetness. Having said that it had a nice malty note to it and the hops came through in a way that I can only describe as being very "hoppy" and I liked it a lot and think that will improve further after conditioning.
I am glad I used the Aurora as a lot of my brews lately and those coming up feature US or NZ fruity hops.

Re: Too much Aurora??
Little update on this brew.
A week or two after bottling the beer had a strange smell that you could detect just as you take a gulp. It was a bit difficult (for me) to describe but the closest I could say was it smelt a bit oniony. Fortunately this seems to have subsided and the beer is superb even if I do say so myself. The carbonation is spot on, just like a cask ale. There is a tasty malty backbone to the beer with the bitterness just right to balance it. The flavour of the Aurora hops is great, slightly spicy with a very faint citrus note and the taste lingers in the mouth forever.
Very pleased (Just hop I can replicate it)
