I use the Holland and Barrett stuff all the time, so I'd have a go with this, I might get some too. Can get 3 kits out of that.
Re: Cheap malt extract? - thoughts?
Nice, have bought some, free delivery as well. Will fire a kilo of that into my next three brews and see what like.

Just had a look at this, but can't work out if it's LME or DME, it doesn't seem to say in the description. Anyone know?Secue wrote:Hey all

Re: Cheap malt extract? - thoughts?
Quick search on Google suggests it's liquid, it'll be the same grade as H&B malt extract just a bigger tub.
I'd have to use the lot in one brew though, can't keep away from the stuff!
Cheers

that's a good deal, the only thing is, once you open it, you risk it getting infected/going off etc.
so it's probably best used all in one go (brew 2/3 kits at the same time, 1.5kg LME = 1.2kg of DME), but yeah, cheaper than buying those 1lb jars from H&B. Good spot Secue.

Anyone ever try this?
What were the results?
Bought some of the Holland & Barrett stuff yesterday so looking forward to giving that a go.

Re: Cheap malt extract? - thoughts?
Hey fish. Yeah I got it and used it in a stout that I just racked yesterday. Tasting so far is very positive and I still have 2kg left for another couple of brews. I will be using this in a bitter next and expect equally good results. You should give it a bash.
Have also used h&b stuff in a stout too (two jars), along with 375gms molasses sugar and that came out nice as well.

Re: Cheap malt extract? - thoughts?
yeah this food grade lark isn't bad at all. the only side-effect i've noticed since using it on all of my last few brews is that it doesn't ferment out as much which although is good for body, it can leave you with a slightly sweeter beer in comparison to using brewing grade LME or DME. if you're using 1-2kg of the stuff i'd definitely recommend either making your brew slightly more bitter/hoppy than usual or increasing/introducing the amount of roasted barley or chocolate malt and decreasing the amount of crystal/cara malts to compensate for the added sweetness. aside from that, happy days.
