First full size AG underway
After a couple of hiccups - realised quite late on that I hadn't got as much pale malt as I thought, so had to dash out and get some more. This morning got up to find that I'm a complete moron and can't work a simple timer plug, so had to wait for strike water to heat up.
Anyway, it's now underway. Recipe is a slightly modified version of the DL Royal Oak one that I've been using for mini-mash:
DL Royal Oak
Size: 23.0 L
Efficiency: 75%
Attenuation: 75.0%
Original Gravity: 1.048 (1.048 - 1.060)
=======#========================
Terminal Gravity: 1.012 (1.010 - 1.016)
=============#==================
Color: 27.2 (6.0 - 18.0)
==================#=============
Alcohol: 4.69% (4.6% - 6.2%)
========#=======================
Bitterness: 31.5 (30.0 - 50.0)
=========#======================
Ingredients:
0.1 g Irish Moss - added during boil, boiled 0.0 min
3.35 kg Pale Ale Malt
0.35 kg Maris Otter Pale
0.26 kg Crystal
0.47 kg Barley Flaked
0.37 kg Dark Brown Sugar
41.4 g Fuggle (4.8%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
20.7 g Goldings (4.5%) - added during boil, boiled 90 min
13.8 g Goldings (4.5%) - steeped after boil
9.2 g Goldings (4.5%) - added dry to secondary fermenter
Treated the water with 0.3ml/L last night, mash tested at about 6.2, so I've added another 1.5ml which should be about another 0.1ml/L by my reckoning. I was in a bit of a hurry to get the mash tun wrapped up n cozy so I haven't tested again.
I've taken a couple of piccies, just got to get them uploaded and I'll link them here.

First couple of piccies:
Mixing in the grain - managed to hit 66.5ish deg C, most happy.

Mash tun all wrapped up n warm in my sleeping bag. Better use than for camping I reckon.

More later!

Should be OK now.DaaB wrote:Links to pics aren't working ItD. (good luck with the brew).
Finished sparging - managed to get about 28L before I ran out of sparge water, gravity of the runnings at that point was about 1009 so decided that would be enough. Too much to fit in the boiler anyway, so I've got some for topping up. More piccies to follow.
Cheer, Daab!
More piccies:
Recirculating...

First run out for the spinny sparger - most glad I snapped this up when I did. Took a bit of time to get the hand of it, but MUCH easier than the batch method I reckon...

And into the boiler - the two 2.2kW elements make short work of bringing the wort to the boil, but too fierce for a rolling boil! Running with just one turned on now.

All looking good so far!

Will do, but after my experience with the mini mash I wanted to get as much as I could out of it! If I end up with much higher efficiency this time I might feel comfortable in stopping early next time.DaaB wrote:next time consider stopping a little higher eg 1012 and see if it improves your beer further. Scooby found it did and so have I
Yeah, I'd already cleaned up the MT and I let some of the hot runnings from the IC run into a FV to clean up the rest of the stuff - just rinsed out the boilers so all done!
Now just got to hope that the good weather isn't going to stay around long enough to bugger up my beer - never thought I'd be hoping for the sun to go away.
