Lids ....?

Post by Ditch » Thu May 31, 2012 3:53 am

Anyone cracked the enigma of FV lids? The inevitable residue of 'spew', inside the underside channel.

I've tried nail brushes and even tooth brushes. They just splay and wear out in no time.

What am I missing here, please? What is there that can consistently get inside that groove and wipe the fermentations dried on sh!t out? :| ?

Thanks.

You've got me worried now. Have always used a bottle brush and hot water without any problems (or so I've thought). I always soak for a few mins in hot water straight after use, and then use the brush, but not really to scrub.

Hot (80*C) 3% solution of lye. Or at least warm (~60*C), but stronger, 5-6%.

You could go for a coopers FV that just rests on and doesnt have any channel or what about one of those cheap round electric toothbrushes.

I find the trick is not to get them manky in the first place... Use an FV with enough headspace that the krausen doesn't reach the lid.

 Damnit, Aleman. Close enough that ye get a cigar anyway.

As soon as I read that, I thought; " Naah. 'Spew'll' burst / rip off the cling film. Then chunder all over the lid anyway .......... So, cling film the f**king Lids!!! "

They're really only there to keep flies out, till she blows. Then they're useless, because they get thrown aside by the spew. Once it subsides? Back to fly stopping duty. And, wrapping Them in clingy will ensure no crap gets into that tight little rim =D>

How sweet the taste when genius meets genius in harmonious fusion, eh?

Barney; It's probably Far from it! Vile, dirty stuff, produced from oil in some factory? Never killed anyone, other than through sexual misuse though, has it?

Doesn't matter though. Quick pish of Iodafor and job's a good'n  Certainly appears to work with my, quite disgusting really, heavy rubber gauntlets.

cling films sterile enough to cover burns, although the advice is not to use the first couple of layers.

That so, Hip'? Cheers then. I'll feel even better about using it now Image

But, given the possibly dubious sources, from which I might get my stuff? And, then, the general state of the place I ferment? For me, it'll be pished. Belt and braces

Good to know I'm probably starting out without a massive handicap though

Idophor is probably a good thing Ditch as it would seem to be pretty neutral, I would not even like to guess how poly vinyl chloride plastics would react with something acidic like starsan.

Acidic? Is that what that Starsan is? Yeppers. See? That's why I'm so wary of it. I'm sure it's a great stuff, if ye happy around esoteric chemicals. I am. But my chemical knowledge is of rat poisons. Not acidic cleansing agents. I recognise my limitations.

Bleach though, and Iodine? Came up with them. Never did me any harm. Like Dogs; I'm relaxed around them
