MARMITE THERMOS 70 LITRES ?

Post by DC » Sun Jun 10, 2012 1:45 pm

Hi all, I am looking at buying a new mashtun and a few people have mentioned the Marmite Thermos pots on the French Ebay
http://cgi.ebay.fr/MARMITE-THERMOS-CAPA ... 519fa3c13b

Image

Whilst looking at them on Ebay I noticed that the 70L pots have a tap already fitted 8) does anyone have one of these 70 litre pots with a tap pre-fitted ? just wondering if its possible to remove the supplied tap and swap it with a ball valve? Just I dont think my DIY skills are up to Vossy's standards to be able to convert a 50L without a tap into a bottom draining mashtun  I think I would be able to manage to make a false bottom to fit to a 70L pot if its possible to swap the taps

I`ve made a 38ltr MT using the copper manifold method and the existing tap hole before, heres a pic of the manifold Image
and the link to an old thread viewtopic.php?f=6&t=43651&p=460355#p460355

Hope this helps

I have a 38L one and my DIY skills are not great either. Just be warned that the tap is not BSP it is metric. I couldn't find anything to adapt the tube that fits the pot to fit a BSP ball valve and the same on the other side for the manifold. In the end a friend bailed me out and enlarged the hole to make it BSP. Before buying I'd investigate and try and find a solution from some of the DIY experts here

Hi Dave.wilton thanks for the heads up regarding the size of the tap fitting/hole size, I found this thread on another forum http://www.brewuk.co.uk/forum/topic/new ... ice-needed and as far as I can see it looks like a ball valve would fit? I am assuming there the same Thermo pots ? Got my 40th Birthday coming up next month so I might ask for a shiny pot for my birthday ! Might see if I can get it engraved as its for my 40th lol

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, 1/2 inch + 3/8 fittings is all you require.

Hi Barneey, Your right a picture does indeed say a thousand words =D> just wondering what the threaded fitting is on the far left of the 3rd pic in your last post that goes into the part that I am assuming goes between the inner & outer skins of the pot and the ball valve screws onto? Is there any chance you could list the parts in the pics? otherwise I fear I might have to print the pics off and take them to screwfix or local plumbing place and say oi mate have you got any of these?

Deffo going to start dropping hints for birthday presents now [-o<

The parts I used tonight were only some spare bits I had in my "spares box" just wanted to give you an idea of the procedure.

Basically the part highlighted by your red square is a 1/2" nipple used to connect the body of the tap and ballvalve (assuming the ballvalve has a female end), (then from Left to Right) Tap Socket+Washer+Washer all supplied with the Thermo Pot, the next thing you need is a "3/8 to EDIT 15mm copper connector" (might come in two parts), the last piece is a "cross over piece".

My best advice would be to visit a plumbers merchant once you have the thermo pot, take along the tap and see what works with the fittings they have.

The original copper manifold I had made, was given away to "Captain Dave" look up members, he is also from the Newcastle area so it might be worth giving him a Message to arrange a local meet to see the actual artical.

Regards

Yeah I took the stuff in to a plumbers but between my lack of knowledge of plumbing and their lack of knowledge of English we didn't get anywhere. I hate being in London sometimes, it wasn't like I could jump in the car and go somewhere else.

Looks like barney has sorted you out. I just didn't want you to have the same hassle I did... carrying a 38L pot all the way to the end of the central line to get someone to drill it!

Hi all, Just been to see a fellow Jims member (carpet19) to see his 70L mashtun as I am looking to buy one for a mashtun conversion ! How Bloody Big are those things !! Couldn't believe the size of the 70L thermopots ! Might need to redesign my brewing stand to fit a 70L pot on it

Hi all, Well I finally did it and made the switch to Shiny ! Just ordered a 70L Thermopot from EBay France to the tune of £94.50 inc p&p ! All paid up through PayPal just got to wait for it to arrive ! Then it will be onto BES to order one of those nice Shiny 3 parts ball valves, then dismantle old mashtun and reuse manifold ! Might have to extend brewing stand to fit new Thermopot though there Huge !!

congrats on joining the shinney world

on my system I have three of those 3 part ball valves - very good they are too, I find that the only one which I need to take apart for cleaning is the one on the copper

while you are planning a brew stand it may be worth having a way to tilt the thermopot to get the beer from the bottom, I use a piece of wood under the back

Hi Barneey, I am going to re-use the manifold from my 24L picnic cooler mashtun (see below), one thing I am unsure about that you may be able to advise on is do I need to keep the length of copper pipe running from the back (Left side of pic) of the manifold to the tap (right side of pic) or can I just turn the manifold around and just connect the copper T piece to the back of the new 3 part ball valve on the new Shiny Thermopot ?

Chomping at the bit to get this new Shiny Mashtun and get cracking on it =P~ Tempted to get onto BES and order my 3 part ball valve ! But I think I will wait until the Shiny arrives and confirm that its deffo the 70L version with the tap already fitted [-o< I
