Ah, something like this could be the answer. I have a similar 10 liter container for parties and such.

The large cap will work as is to allow O2 to enter when pouring, but if you feel like the cap is too large, you could apply a bulkhead

then perhaps a wing bolt with a rubber washer

Cheers again. I'm going to try with the tyre valve first. I am stressing out about where I should place it and more importantly... how will I get the damn thing on!!

Well... that was easy!

I drilled a hole using a counter sink (forstener bit were too big)and fed the valve through using thread. No leaks at all. :D :D

I filled the cube with water and connected it to my beer engine using the crappy Aeroflow tap; hosing was right round the outlet so both 'air in' half and 'liquid out' half were fed into the hose. I held the pin down on the tyre valve and managed to pull off 6+ pints of water in a row. Cube came under no real stress; the sides were sucked in slightly but the valve hissed louder as more air was drawn in and it stablised nicely. I'll only be pulling off 1 pint usually and maybe once in a while, 3 or 4 so... all good! :D

Sadly though... I do believe that with this big bulky crappy tap on its own, it will still gurgle. I've decided to make a hole on the cube's standard cap and attach a trusty drum tap, or even a Dalex tap! It may not gurgle then as there is less flow on these taps... i think!WIll hopefully get round to trying this tomorrow or Sat. Will of course update here.

Was considering something else too... Next time I have a beer in primary, I'll collect the c02 in a polypin. When it's full, I can then connect the pin to the tyre valve and as beer is drawn off, co2 can enter.

Cheers for the tyre valve idea Fil. Such an easy solution and SUPER effective.

Nice one.

I guess you could now use a Co2 tyre inflator To provide a co2 blanket.

Could be an idea! Those canisters are tiny though... surely they wouldn't go far...

Actually... they do seem bigger than the standard pressure barrel ones. I might buy a few to try out. Here's my thinking. If I fill a cube with crystal clear beer from secondary, I can carb it up with a c02 inflator as opposed to priming sugar. Means I can move the cube arond and not have to worry about clouding it up with sediment. :-)

Cheers!

Right... more progress. I realised that I could yank the outlet section out of the crappy tap and fit a drum tap to the lid. Fitted perfectly.

Image

Got myself a nozzle and attached it to the valve. Never really appreciated how these nozzles work before. Air can enter and pressurize whatever the air is flowing into... but it can't come back out. So... I blew down the nozzle until my face hurt and pressurized a cube full of water.

Image

I removed the nozzle as I knew it would begin sucking in air when the pressure decreased. I Was able to draw off 2.5 pints on the pressure alone - no gurgling. So... if that was CO2 from one of those tyre inflators, I reckon I'd be able to up the pressure more and perhaps could pour off may be 4 pints before having to inject again. This little puppy could sit in my fridge for weeks and I wouldn't have to worry about my beer going off!

I connected it to the beer engine with the nozzle in.

Image

Worked a treat. I like the idea that the valve closes after just the right amount of air has been sucked in. Suppose there's nothing stopping me from keeping this carbed with co2 as well. Next to it is my homemade stainless steel 5L mini keg fridge. May make another one for the 10L cubes...

if this is correct..

http://www.kgbanswers.co.uk/what-is-the ... cm/1925604

you want 44g of co2 to displace a 22.4l volume

with the valve the top end you could purge a can without having to tip it??..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

Cheers Fil. I've bought this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/190637833756? ... 1497.l2649

I'll have to see how it goes when it arrives. Check the specs out on this Kinkeg... co2 bulbs are only 8g. Mine is 16g. Have no idea how long these bulbs last on Kingkegs. Might need to put out another post.

I put another post here: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=52281 introducing the Jerry Keg. ;-)

My 25L jerry cans arrived today. Got to work attaching a tap and putting a hole on the lid for a bung.

I used a long length of wood to hold the nut with one hand and turned the tap around with the other. Was dead easy. 24hrs in and no leaking. Very happy.

Going to make another one of these. Just waiting on another tap from Ebay. :-)

I have been given 3 x 25L hdpe foodsafe cubes from work,

If I can't fill the cube fully with my 23L brew will the 2L of airspace be ok ?

I intended to swill the wort around the vessel to steralise it (although I will spray with Videne solution first  )
I could squirt some CO2 in the gap if required?

I'm looking at using 1 or 2 to store "wort" and perhaps converting the other one as a secondary FV/pressurised barrel.

Look what happens when your kids buy you a beerkit for your birthday!!!

They hold more than 25L to the brim nearer 27L

You can squeeze the sides in to reduce the volume thou.

I'll be using mine as secondaries and storage, and plan on squirting some co2 in them prior to stop oxidisation.

If their is still some yeast activity thou, it may seem pointless as co2 being released will need "burping" occasionally and provide it's own co2 blanket. I wont be using an airlock.

For hot wort I'd steralise, swirl wort and use co2 if I was keeping it any lenght of time.

It's better to prop up the side with the opening and push the all the air out, but if you can't, 2l of airspace is OK.

You can do this if you want, but for hot-packing wort, there's no need. Using it as a secondary is a whole other thing.

One thing that I don't remember being mentioned regarding yeast starters, depending on when you plan to pitch, you can just use some of the boiled wort for the starter. When you're transferring the hot wort to the cube, just grab what you need for the yeast starter in another suitable container. If it's a large yeast starter, you'll want to adjust the sparge amounts.

Id be very careful with pressure and these beasts.. ive had conventional plastic pressure vessels fail below the beer line... a micro leak can result in atomised beer.. that might not sound too bad, but it gets absorbed by anything cloth or paper, (wall paper carpets and curtains, books even...) and left unattended for a few hours could fill every room in the house..

gas up to replace drawn beer and keep o2 out by all means but dont charge up with co2 in preperation of a weeks pouring, and purge excess pressure when done for the session..
