25L jerrycans to mature/clear and stockpile?
Re: 25L jerrycans to mature/clear and stockpile?
If using for no chill, try and squeeze the sides together to push the air out and then put the lid on.
Re: 25L jerrycans to mature/clear and stockpile?
Well today I've gone the whole hog.
On Weds I made a no chill brew banged it into the cube. Today my yeast arrived US-05 and I simply sprinkled it into the cube first thing with the cube immersed in a water bath with Aquarium heater to keep the temperature,
Already have a 25mm Krausen. Saves sterilising a Fermenter etc.

Nice idea jonnyt... however, how will you clean the krausen if it cakes onto the roof of the cube, especially inside the handle...

You have to Oxi-clean the cube twice. Once upright and once upside down. In both cases, let it sit a couple days then go overboard rinsing.floydmeddler wrote:Nice idea jonnyt... however, how will you clean the krausen if it cakes onto the roof of the cube, especially inside the handle...
I hot-pack then ferment in a cube that's labeled as 23L (6 gallons), but it holds closer to 27L.

The problem is- hot-packing wort draws in the walls of the cube, thereby decreasing the space for krausen.

I'm a few days in, nice healthy Krausen and still head room of an inch or two.
My containers are the EU ones and the fluid doesn't go in the handle at all.
I'll let you know how they clean up but I think a bit of Oxy with hot water agitated about will make mincemeat of it.

I just got a few of these 20L jerrycans. they are made for water so hope they are food safe. At least to mature beer in anyway. the tap is moulded into the inside which is handy as it doesnt appear to have any crevises for dirt to hide!
My only worry is I have my first beer conditioning in it. I primed it as normal, and probably shouldnt of. The jerrycan has swollen right up, and I keep venting it. Id hate for it to explode.

I will have to let you know! I asked for some 20L foodsafe jerry cans for my bday, and they are what turned up!
Turns out apparently they were bought at The Range. Although a quick check on the website and I cant see them, maybe they were just at the store here.

A little swelling is good, too much and that sucka will explode. You want some pressure so that when the yeast are totally finished and the beer is refrigerated, some CO2 will be absorbed. The trick is to bleed off just enough pressure.Cazamodo wrote:I just got a few of these 20L jerrycans. they are made for water so hope they are food safe. Next time, to make the process easier and more predictable, let the beer totally finish fermenting, rack to the cask and add a reduced amount of priming sugar. Figure it for 1.25 to 1.5 volumes of CO2. There will be much less sugar than you expect.

I went for 2.0 volumes. I better keep an eye on it!

My Cubes have been working out great.
I'm starting a rolling stockpile at last.
I bought a £2.50 fridge off ebay. After primary, i've been dropping the beer into the cubes and cold crashing my everyday house Ale, then force carbing in cornies. Perfectly clear and very good beer in no time.
Other beers sit in the cubes maturing for longer, which will spice up my beer diet.

So, how is the use of jerrycans coming? Anyone have experiences good or bad to report? I am going to try using a tire stem on a 5 liter container.

Re: 25L jerrycans to mature/clear and stockpile?
These are exactly the ones I've been using. Extra Fort on the side, extra strong in French. I've found a tapless version that's marked up as 20 litres but comfortably holds 25. I haven't fermented in them yet - the thought of krausen in handle is off-putting but I use them for secondary (if not dry hopping) and for conditioning prior to filling bag-in-a-box bags for handpull dispense.Cazamodo wrote:I just got a few of these 20L jerrycans. they are made for water so hope they are food safe. They are very tough.
