On August 16, barney posted the following recipe on my "Define 'Strong Mild'" thread. I haven't brewed it yet, but it looks so delicious I took the liberty of reposting with some volume and mass conversions and brew calculations. Discuss!

Barney's Excellent Strong Mild (ESM, if you will)
10 US gal = 8.3 Imperial gal = 37.9 L
77% = 8 kg = 17.64 lbs, Fawcetts Tipple malt
6.7% = 700 g = 1.54 lb, Aromatic
5.8% = 600 g = 1.32 lb, Black malt
5.8% = 600 g = 1.3 2lb, Cane sugar
3.4% = 350 g = .77 lb, Pale crystal
1.4% = 150 g = .33 lb, Torrified wheat
40 g = 1.4 oz, Willamette, 90 min
20 g = .7 oz, Challenger, 90 min
20 g = .7 oz, Willamette, 15 min
13 g = .46 oz, Challenger, 15 min
Bitterness ratio: .5
Yeast: Brewlabs TV3, which accentuates the malt flavours nicely.
Primed for cask with Jaggery Goor unrefined sugar to 1.5 vols
Good to go at three weeks.
OG : 1.066
ABV : 6.3%
IBU : 27
SRM : 32

Question for barney (and anyone else):
Brewlabs are difficult for me to obtain, but I can easily get brands like Wyeast, White Labs, Fermentis/Safale, Lallemand/Danstar, Muntons, and Red Star.
Which alternative yeast(s) to Brewlabs TV3 do you recommend?

Thanks again, barney!

Well the recipe looks very nice indeed.
I have never used the TV3 but it is described as having moderate to high ester ability and good floculation. I would therefore use WLP002 which I have used to good effect when brewing the recipe for Gales Festival Mild (a strong dark mild) taken from Graham Wheelers book...

Get it brewed Seymour, All reports are good.
At the moment its a lovely aroma and flavour combination of smooth liquorice, caramel with a hint of coffee, body is not too heavy but coats the mouth nicely. Do you know if there is a BJPC category for strong mild? I reckon it would go down well. What should it go in?
Even my dad likes it, LOL.
The TV3 strain is, I believe, the fullers strain. As far as I know both White Labs and Wyeast do a version of that strain.

No, there's no BJCP category called "Strong Mild" which explains part of my initial confusion. I love the concept, though, and this demonstrates the frustration many brewers feel with BJCP strictures.barney wrote:...Do you know if there is a BJPC category for strong mild? So, in a BJCP competition, you'd best enter your beer as:
23. Specialty Beer based on classic style 11A. English Mild, then explain your personal definition of "Strong Mild" in the brewer's notes.
Yep, which means if TV3 is the same as Fuller's, then you and jimp2003 are in perfect agreement. The Fuller's strain is available as Wyeast 1968 and WLP002. I love it, this beer is sounding better and better!barney wrote:...The TV3 strain is, I believe, the fullers strain. As far as I know both White Labs and Wyeast do a version of that strain.

A friend of mine makes such weird stuff like 10% ABV 100 IBU pale milds and I can say they're delicious. He's brewing to historic recipes, as published by Ron Pattinson and Kristen England on http://barclayperkins.blogspot.com.

I think I might have the recipe for that.
I will have a look in my historical mild book.
