19L brew from my 11L stockpot?

Post by Monkeybrew » Fri Sep 07, 2012 2:04 pm

I'm having a crack at a 2nd extract brew tomorrow and this is my plan......

As I have only got an 11L stockpot, I plan to dissolve 1kg of my DME in a maximum of 9-10L of water. I can maintain a vigorous boil at this level of wort and plan to keep topping up with boiling water from another pan to combat evaporation.

When the boil is over I will strain my concentrated hopped wort into my FV, and I will then dissolve the remaining 1kg of DME into my wort and then top up to 19L.

To me this seems feasible, or am I missing something?

Here is my recipe

AG#42 - Heritage Double Ale - 10.5%

Hi!

That method is as described in a good book by John Palmer, however think carefully about the safety aspects of lifting and moving a hot pot of wort etc etc.
Have a look at this:
www.howtobrew.com/section2/index.html

I have a larger Alu stock pot (heavey gaugue with tap & hop stopper) which can safely boil 19-20l which is now surpless to requirements if you are interested make me an offer via PM

:)

Good luck & happy brewing !

Hi Guy and thanks for the reply.

Lol, I've actually got that book in hard copy :)

Re: the hot pot issue, I have used this straining method with said pot for my mini BIAB brews but I hear where your coming from.

I will consider your Ali stockpot though mate, is it standard Royal Mail from the IOM or airmail?

The good thing about topping up with ice cold bottled water, is that it brings the wort temp down nice and quickly, and stops the need for a wort chiller.

Hi

No worries, I dont see any issue with this as I did a very passable extract brew of Srah hughes ruby mild using a very similar technique.

The benefit of having a larger pot would be you can add the cold water to the wort in the pot then transfer via the hop strainer/tap once the trub/hops etc have settled a bit...
It will be Royal mail/parcel force from the island to Essex, shouldn't be too expensive. To be honest I'm not looking for much for it, so if you are interested let me know :)
I found it alot easier than usinga 15l s/s pot with no tap, which is what I used for the SHRM mentioned above!
:)

Good luck !

In my extract brewing days ( about 18 months ago!) I brewed with a 15l stockpot adding half the extract at the start and the other half at the end then traneferred to the FV and added the rest of the water. Never had a problem with this method.

I used to do that too but as partial mash with my old 15l pot. After the boil I used to top up to 5 gallons and add malt extract in the F/V. Apart from the occasional haze issue from not boiling the extract, I never had a problem with this method. Served me very well until I got my 33l pot :D

Cheers Tom
