Kit storage

I've just placed an order with BrewUK for Muntons Old English Bitter plus Festival Golden Stag and Pilgrims Hope. I'm also tempted to pick up a Wherry or two from Wilkos, if they're still available at £15. Now, in general, 40 pints will last me getting on for 2 months so I'm looking at the last kit being brewed in 6 months time. What is the best way of storing the LME, yeast and (for the Festival kits) hops for that kind of time?

Hi!

Good question!

Take the yeast out from under the cap and stick it in the fridge (in a box on the middle shelf - not in the door)
The tins can be kept somewhere cool and dark away from dust and mold (in a cardboard box in a cool cellar or garage is ideal. But as long as they are keot below25C and they are not subject to freezing you should be ok.

The hops can go in the fridge or the freezer - just be sure to keep them out of the light!

I would say to forget about storing them for six months, get enough bottles, and ferment them all one after the other. Then, you allow them to condition and start to get a better beer from them. When you start to drink the next kit in a couple of months, it will taste really nice. In 6 months, when you start your final kit, it will be a belter of a brew!

But, I'd say that surely all would be good to be kept in a garage even if you left the hops and yeast in there? Wilkos and Tescos keep them on shop floor for probably a good a few months, and people use without problem. So, imagine a nice cold garage over winter would would be fine...

Thanks both. Sounds like a cardboard box in the garage is the answer then - I might put the yeast in the fridge but, over winter, the temperature might not be too different. Unfortunately I keg my beer rather than bottle it so, with two barrels, I'm limited to having one brew drinking and one conditioning at any given time...
