Starter problems?

Post by mst3k » Sat May 05, 2007 12:12 pm

Hi there,

Last night at about 5pm I made my first starter ever. I following Daab's website (brupak) but used 2 "RXB 6 G YEAST PREMIUM" yeast packs (1 that came with the Brupak and 1 that came with Muntons PG Gold Touch.

The air lock went crazy at first, But,

This morning the air lock has slowed right down to a virtual stop!

Is this right? or should I just use a Safale S-04 Yeast

I have only heard bad things about this yeast RXB 6

So, I was very surprised to see the "RXB 6 G YEAST PREMIUM" in the Brupak, is this right? or have I been robbed of a Brupak yeast?

Thanks

I used:

2 x "RXB 6 G YEAST PREMIUM" (1 form Brupak, 1 form Muntons)
4 x Table spoons light spray malt
1/2 pint of water
24 *C

2 possibilities spring to mind -

1. The temperature dropped overnight

2. The yeast was starting to run out of sugar.

In either case, as long as there's some activity it should be fine to use. The purpose of a starter is to let the yeast multiply, and it should have done that by now.

Nice 1 thanks Jim

It was left in the airing cupboard all night, so the temp was constant,

But, I was thinking the same about the sugar, Its not a lot for that amount of yeast, Should I add more?

Thanks

Sorry Daab,

To be honest I didn't realise I have to check it,

What should it be at the end?

Thanks
