Styrian Stunner 08/04/2007

Post by Vossy1 » Mon May 07, 2007 8:06 pm

Today I made this little baby for the umpteenth time 8)

Based on 80% efficiency

Marris Otter 8.55kg
Styrian Goldings 141g (Bittering hop 2hrs)
Styrian Goldings 28g (aroma hop last 15 min
10g Irish Moss (last 15 min)

Mash temp 65.5 deg c
Mash duration 90 min

Boil time 120 min
Boil volume 63.69ltr
Final volume 46ltr

Target OG 1040
Target FG 1009

All went well apart from the boil off. I had to add 3ltr to the copper to end up with 53.5ltr. This gives me my target volume of 46 ltr.

This means that with a boil volume of 66.69ltr I end up with 46 ltr after a 2 hour boil.

I set my efficiency at 80% but still got a OG of 1044..very happy 8)

Not bad...not bad Wez 8)

I should have added some crystal, then I could have called it Red Delight  ...sort of :D

Nice one Vossy, I enjoyed my batch of the Stunner.

I was gearing up to brew another batch of your Premium Pale last monday, and in the end I brewed a variant … following the hop timing advice in the 'BBQ beer' thread, to bring it down from 40 to 30 IBU (according to Beertools):

Maris Otter 4.5kg
S Goldings 180g @ 20 mins

Cheers,
Matt

I AM doing this brew next, the Styrians I get from my local brewery are awesome, they smell fantastic lovely smelling beer fridge at the moment. The brewery that i get them from do a pale called ' fallen angel' and their head brewer told me that they only use Strians in it, tastes sooo good. I bet this comes close..

I'd love to dry hop this one as well.

I love really hoppy beers and I'm sure the 28g's of aroma hops could be improved upon for my taste :?

as it happens I have some muslin stuff, was intended as a pre filter fo the plate chiller but I'm sure I can find another use for it...now it's redundant

Oh yes.... how about 75G's, plus dry hopping, as in my recipe below. This came out lovely, sadly gone too soon :(

4.5kg Maris Otter Pale (Warminster)
46g UK Goldings - copper
42g Styrian G's - copper
30g Styrian G's - last 15 mins
45g Styrian G's - on switchoff steep 1hr+ during settle & cooling
15g Styrian G's - dry hop in cask

OG 43

Nottingham yeast.

The styrian character really comes through. This is such a popular type of beer now, if you just count the number of pale/golden/summer beers hopped with styrians on the supermarket shelves. Yes, summer is approaching, but I'm sure there are more of this type this year than last.
