My 4th Brew!
I just did a Smugglers - well, two actually. I split the kit and did half with Wyeast #1098 and half with the supplied yeast.
Both fermented down to 1016 in about the same time.
After about 10 days in the bottle the Wyeast version had more flavours - but unfortunately one not too pleasant overriding medicinal flavour. Hopefully this will mellow out in time. The Munton's yeast batch had a cleaner though blander flavour.
However, this was still green beer. They've been bottled about 3 weeks now and I think it's time for another sampling...

Well, I'm 'sampling' the version brewed with Wyeast now...
It's got a nice malty taste, strong bitter finish, slight hints of apple juice sweetness (but definitely not cidery). Unfortunately, it still has that damned medicinal flavour as well, although it's mellowed slightly. Maybe this is one to put to the back of the cupboard for a couple of months...
It's got to be due to the yeast because there's no hint of the flavour in the other half - it's not from bleach either because I used Iodophor (and rinsed with water). Of course, it was second generation #1098 washed from the cake of a previous brew so it's always possible I just screwed up somewhere. Still, it does make me a bit wary of using yeasts other than those supplied for these kits in future.
EDIT: The other with the standard yeast has a lighter, cleaner if undistinctive taste, but the same strong bitter finish. Definitely no medicinal flavour. Difficult to judge really which is better. I think the standard yeast is better now but if the medicinal flavour eventually goes then the Wyeast batch would be a better beer - the malty flavour is certainly more interesting there.
Neither batch seems to be a particularly wonderful beer (yet?). They will be great BBQ beers but there's not much there to sip and savour. Still, I prefer strong flavours and rougher tastes - your milage may vary.

Hi all
Here's a piccy of my finished brew taken this evening.

The brew finally finished with an SG of 1.014 but took an age to clear, hence my previous post!
It still has a very slight haze but I'm drinking it at 9C and not near room temp.
It's quite fruity but bitter/hoppy and dry on the palette leaving you salivating and wanting another pint!
It has a nice aroma and no sulphurous smell.
Hope you enjoy looking at the picture as much as I like drinking the product
Cheers
Graham

Re: My 4th Brew!
Thanks for this very informative post,
I have been having temp troubles, and now going to buy a fish tank heater.
Thanks
Jason
