They've got it wrong then and you can argue your case. The charge for VAT should be 20% of the goods value including the cost of postage. You shouldn't be anywhere near to the customs duty charge threshold. I ordered some beer taps from America and the charge I had was exactly 20% and corresponded to the VAT charge.

My brother (Belter) has just got his as well and was charged the same.

I did use a home address aye.
Seems like a lost cause, to complain you either have to go through the rigmarole of writing a bloody letter out and printing it (haven't caught up with email apparently) or ring them on an 0845 number.
I don't really understand how you can mess calculating tax on something like this up. Its fairly obvious, especially when the cost of the bloody item is attached to the invoice which is on the side of the box. It isn't often I get annoyed but HMRC seem to do it with amazing regularity, their sheer incompetence never ceases to amaze me. No wonder so many evade taxes, i can't blame them if this is the shoddy level of service you can expect.

See if there is an alternative number on www.saynoto0870.com. There's bound to be one for HMRC.

HMRC (HM Revenue & Customs/Inland Revenue)
0845 010 9000 029 2050 1261
VAT & Excise Helpline
This is “overseas” number. Withhold your num (using 141) when calling from UK or else the call will be blocked. Expect to be told off for not using premium number!

I am firmly sickened by HMRC, the pump was $32 which is £20, to which they have charged nearly the same again. What a bunch of thieving c**ts
I feel your pain, I got stung too - so it's not just UK customs and the other thieving rats, clearing agency. It must be the luck of the draw as to which containers, crates whatever they inspect because I've since had another electrical item that was dearer than the pumps sent from HK and had no fees at all to pay on arrival... so, what's that all about? Grrrrr, feckers!

Has anyone got the pumps though without charge? sounds like its UPS that are doing it.
Would it be posible to get the supplier to send them marked as a gift? then it will sail though.....

Mine just turned up. Very quick shipping I must say. At my door within like 6hrs of it landing on the tarmac at Exeter airport (you can track it online)!

However... UPS also trying to chaft me for £20 (£9.33 VAT and £11 brokerage surcharge). Interesting that they seem to be plucking the figure out of the sky as its different to others!

Both myself and the delivery man think its excessive so I have returned it to the depot whilst I have it out with UPS over the phone and try to get the charge down. It does say on the enclosed delivery note that the value of the goods is only $32 and it says all charges are estimated.

Fingers crossed I can get them to take less. Still would be good value though at £60-£70 all in for this type of pump.

Dean.

That's good. Yeah I'm going to ring HMRC tomorrow and get to the bottom of it. Hopefully you won't have to pay out, had I had any sense I'd have done the same as you.

I'm just going with hose tails, can't justify the expense. Camlocks won't add anything hose tails don't add already. That said my whole set up is designed around me NOT needing the pump that much. I shouldn't even need to disconnect any hoses except to pump chemicals through the FV prior to filling it, then reconnecting it to the boiler.
