Empty Bottle storage

Post by RdRd » Thu Nov 15, 2012 6:12 pm

I have to store empty bottles in a shed, no room at the inn.

With winter hitting I am worried that they will get damp (even if they are oven -dried when put outdoors) and perhaps get condensation and then mould in them. Cleaning it out would be a royal pain

a) is this likely?
b) I have some screw tops would it make sense to rinse with sterlizer (I use metabisulphite solution) leave them damp but seal them?
c) oven dry and seal those I can?
d) any suggestions for best practice (yea keep them full of course!)

Mine stay in a my garage on a small wooden shelf unit. The bottom shelf sits an inch or two above the floor, and each shelf is made of slats so has air circulation.. Think it cost about a tenner from Argos or somewhere. The garage has no heating so it gets pretty much as cold in there as the outside does, and I have never had any problems with bottles going mouldy etc. If you are keeping them outside, then I would suggest probably keeping them upside down would be your best bet. My dad keeps his empties for me, but keeps them in a box outside, the right way up and rain water gets in and mould grows. I end up chucking most of them.

I have to keep mine in an unheated garage and I've had a few problems.
I've started to store mine ready for bottling.
Cleaned and pre-sprayed with starsan, then I put a plastic reseal cap on each of them.

It sounds a lot of work but on bottling day you just empty (no-rinse) starsan and fill.
