Re: rhinegold
Rheingold definitely has a place in New York City working class culture up through the 1960's, but was a mass-produced adjunct lager, not much different from Budweiser, Coors, Miller, and the rest. In fact, the Miller Lite recipe was passed down to them via mergers and aquisitions all the way back to Rheingold brewmasters. Rheingold is back, but just as a marketing label of another generic. Not very good, and probably never was. Extremely loyal following back in the day, though.

Re: rhinegold
Right. Really more of a nostalgic, cultural thing as opposed to a truly great lost beer.
Here's a cool story about it:

and http://www.epinions.com/content_5650161796?sb=1
I think this line says it all, though:

I guess, then, if we want something better than Coors Light, we're all trying to impress the brother-in-law? Who knew?At the end of the event, full bottles of Rheingold were left beside empties of Corona and Bud,” he observed. “We wanted Rheingold to pass the brown-paper-bag construction worker test rather than the impress my brother-in-law test,” explained Kenny, “…something that sits between Pabst and Coors Light.”

I find these embossed chug-a-mug bottles in the woods all the time and I always wondered what the beer was like.seymour wrote:Rheingold is back, but just as a marketing label of another generic. Not very good, and probably never was. Extremely loyal following back in the day, though.

The old Rheingold claimed to be very dry, which if true wouldn't be that bad, but the new version is sweet. It tastes disgusting. It's not surprising that people prefer other adjunct lagers to the new Rheingold.
Sommeliers recommend that you swirl a glass of wine and inhale its bouquet before throwing it in the face of your enemy.
