Hi everyone, quick question
I bought the 25kg of Light LME from The Home Brew Shop yesterday, and I decided this was the best way to make beer almost as cheap as AG without the time consuming process and mess (Parents were flipping at me about making a mess etc) so my plan is as follows, obviously most people would use the required LME types for beers, i.e. wheat lme, dark lme etc etc, however I can't do this on the cheap, so would it be possible to do the following:
Make a batch of beer using an AG recipe i.e. if I wanted wheat beer, make a small mash of 1kg of wheat which would be easier to do and less mess, mash for just long enough to get some extraction and flavour i.e. 30 mins - 1 hour and then boil this plus some LME with hops for 1 hour, and then add more LME to the boil at the end, and then add water as normal with extract, the idea being I still have the characteristics of a wheat beer, but using light LME for the sugars.
And for beers which don't need any mashable grains, i.e. only need crystal etc, I could steep as normal and add to lme and hops
Would this work as I am thinking it should?
Thanks.
Bulk LME question
Re: Bulk LME question
You might as well go ag with all the faffing around you are intending to do

Re: Bulk LME question
Not really faffing about, I already AG (quite a lot lately) so have the grain already, and really a 3/4 hour brew day plus all the prep is much harder and annoying then just mini mashing/steeping and adding some LME....
And after seeing the Yanks talk about how good extract can be if its fresh, I decided to save myself the time tbh.

Re: Bulk LME question
What you propose is partial mash brewing i.e producing part of your fermentables using grain in a mini-mash and then the rest from extract. Its a great method that allows extract brewers to use some of the malts that need to be mashed rather than just being limited to those that can be steeped.
