Thats what I call sitting on the fence
So Fancy advocates that method then, I've heard of Wheeler, Line and Palmer but not Fancy

Never heard of Fancy the famous Victorain Brewster?

Call yourself a brewer??!!
Naa I'm not sitting on the fence...I feel that both methods work fine, and that
done properly, there's little to choose between them, so I just do whatever I feel like at the time.

Just done my first batch sparge, usually do fly,how do you work out the efficiency for batch I want to compare as to what I get from fly.
For 13lt
House Bitter
2670g - optic
160g - crystal
130g - flaked barley
Hops
Goldings 5.1 AA boil for 90 min
Goldings 5.1 AA boil for 15 min
Ibu - 25
Yeast - brewlab standard
OG - 1044
Collected 17.5 lt at 1041 before boil, last runnings were 1024.
Final volume after boil topped up with required water is 13 lt at 1044.

Good job DRB. Looks like you hit your intended strength perfectly.
How did the efficiency compare to your usual methods?

This recipe is based on 65% for fly sparge hitting it right on every time, collecting 16.5 lt,but that would be running the final sparge runnings to 1008.Today I got 17.5 lt batch sparge with the final runnings at 1024,but still got the same final strenghth as I do when fly sparging down to 1008,I thought having last runnings at 1024 would give me a higher og than 1044.

I used used to batch sparge but now I am a fully converted Fly Sparger.
With batch sparging, I spent way too much time calculating how much water I would need for each batch (being that 50% of volume run off from each batch apparently gives maximum efficiency). I always got frustrated and annoyed with the way things went. I hated having to do the run off but then having to do it at least twice was even worse. Basically I ended up being lax about it.
My first attempt at fly sparging was a fantastic success although my efficiency never really improved (due to using a rubbish hame made contraption). The brew day was perfect though. I did the run off with no hassle and ended up with a brighter wort. The element never cut out due to too much grain getting in. I also hit my volume targets.
My second attempt with a spiny arm and I had a great efficiency. The day ran really smoothly and I enjoyed it more than usual. Also, the day took no longer than normal for me.
I thought batch would be easier but it just didn't really work for me. Fly Sparging all the way from now on.

Never batch sparged.
