Videne

Post by neilmcca » Fri Dec 07, 2012 6:51 pm

Hello all,

Just ordered some Videne for sanitising my kegs, i've never used this stuff before and i'm looking for advice on a few things,
as i understand it,when you make the solution, you use 1.25ml to 1 litre of water,
what i'd like to know is, is it advisable to throw away the solution after it's been used once, or can it be used again ? and if so how would you know when to change it ?
i guess it's no great loss if i have to chuck it after one use as it's so cheap, but i'm stingy :)
i also believe if you stick to the required 1.25ml per litre, it's not necessary to rinse FV, keg etc ? is that so ?

Thanks in advance.

It's best to treat it as disposable although I tend to use the same 5 litres for a whole brew from FV to keg (so a couple of weeks). Mixed to the correct dilution it is a "cheap lager" colour and will fade as it becomes less effective. If it's the colour of Carlsberg and not cloudy it is fine to use!

Yes, 1.25ml per litre is no rinse. Some folk have raised doubts about its effectiveness but as long as your stuff is clean before you sanitise it will be fine. I tend to put a couple of litres in a cornie (including through the gas/liquid posts), fit the lid and leave it for 10 minutes or so, shaking every now and again, then tip it out and give it at least another 5 minutes for the foam to die down then tip that out too.

I make up a 1 litre spray bottle, and that lasts weeks if kept in the dark. Light makes it lose its efficiency, which shows up as the stuff getting paler. Used it for about 13 brews now and not had any problems.

I've used it for around 20 brews with no problem. I concur the colour tells all

Which Videne is best for sanitising?

I was in Sainsbury's the other night and remembered I wanted to get some and asked for the surgical scrub!

Now I'm thinking I got the wrong one and should have got the antiseptic solution!

Can I still use the surgical scrub?

Cheers

Hi All,

I am looking for buying cheap Videne.
Recently i checked in local pharmacy, asda pharmacy and boots pharmacy. Price is the same - £10.98 for 500ml. It seems for me it is too expensive.

Could please someone suggest where to buy Videne around B-ham (Halesowen)?

I would appreciate your help.
Thanks.
