Hop Heavy Aurora and Bobek Double IPA

Post by floydmeddler » Tue Nov 27, 2012 10:07 pm

I love Bobek and when I tried Aurora some time ago I remember liking those too. I don't remember any specifics though...

I would like to push these hops to the max and have them in an IPA. I'm going in with 400g. Here's what I'm thinking:

Slovenian IPA

Size: 25.0 L
Efficiency: 80%
Attenuation: 77.0%

Original Gravity: 1.071 (1.050 - 1.075)
Terminal Gravity: 1.016 (1.010 - 1.018)
Color: 21.39 (8.0 - 14.0)
Alcohol: 7.25% (5.0% - 7.5%)
Bitterness: 66.3 (40.0 - 60.0)

Ingredients:
7.0 kg (92.1%) Maris Otter Pale Ale Malt - added during mash
500 g (6.6%) CaraMalt - added during mash
100 g (1.3%) Torrified Wheat - added during mash
50 g (12.5%) Bobek (5.17%) - added first wort, boiled 90 m
50 g (12.5%) Aurora (8.1%) - added first wort, boiled 90 m
50 g (12.5%) Bobek (5.17%) - added after boil, steeped 60 m
50 g (12.5%) Aurora (8.1%) - added after boil, steeped 60 m
100 g (25.0%) Bobek (5.17%) - added dry to secondary fermenter - 3.5 days
100 g (25.0%) Aurora (8.1%) - added dry to secondary fermenter - 3.5 days

Has anyone ever heavily hopped with either of these before? I love Bobek; even that 'cat piss' taste that people loathe! Am I right in thinking that Aurora is a super charged Bobek? If that's the case... perhaps I need 400g of Aurora! However... i don't want to risk not having that Bobek goodness that I know and love!

Any advice / comments greatly received... even if you think this is a bad idea ;-)

Mmm...

Maybe Celeia need to get in there somewhere... anyone have views on these? Sound nice. Apparently a cross between Styrian Goldings and Aurora.

I did an all-Aurora pale ale earlier this year it had 20g at 60mins then 40g at 10 and 0 mins so not quite as hop heavy as yours but it was still intense and very nice after several weeks of conditioning. I wouldn't bother with celeia as well as the hops you have listed as they would get lost. I have found celeia are best as a more subtle hop addition.

Cheers J. That's really helpful. Celeia are out! Can you describe the Aurora flavour? Is it like Bobek do you reckon?

Cheers ;-)

I have never (knowingly) tried bobek in a beer so can't comment on them. But looking back at my notes I found the Aurora to give a very smooth bitterness and a classic intense styrian hop aroma and flavour with a slight spicyness at the beginning and a lemony note on the finish.

Spot on! I was trying to find the words but failed miserably. I've heard a lot of bad press about Aurora but I've had nothing but good beers out of 'em.
From what you say about Bobek in your previous posts, Floyd, they may work pretty well with Aurora. Didn't they work well with your orange beer?

Hey DaveyT, I've used Bobek loads of times... just not in a massive amount like this. F*ck it... It's happening! Will do a brew day post;-)

As a man wiser than myself once said, 'He who dares, Rodders, he who dares!'
I lost 90g of Aurora in a freezer spoil in August and I totally regret not throwing the whole lot in a brew before it happened.
Good luck!

Yep done it before.... several times

Check out our collaboration beer - Kernel/London Amateur Brewers ABC Pale Ale if you can find it. I can't remember the exact quantities but... we used MOP plus a touch of Munich and a touch of caramalt. Magnum for bittering then equal additions (5kg each time) of Aurora, Bobek and Celeia at 15, 10 and 5 mins. Brewlength of 3.2hl. IBUs about 50. US05. Then dry hop the crap out of it. It'll be awesome.
