Rover Pump M-20

Post by greenhouseuk » Mon Dec 10, 2012 3:10 pm

...So I got the pump (from Germany), and I got the Viton seal to make this operable at High temperatures.

- I have no idea how to fit the seal!

Has anyone any experience of this pump/ seal combo who put me out of my misery?

I don't actually know how you'd go about it as I've never seen the inside of this pump before, but in the absense of anything else then I'd 'imagine' you would have to take the imeller and so on off the shaft; presumably the seal is for where the shaft enters the impeller housing/chamber.

Thanks.

Eventually after starring at it for a while I found the cream coloured manifold(?) could be prized away from the body of the pump and that the flip side of this manifold had the old seal embedded within.

Thanks for taking the time - job done - will let you know whether it blows up once I have managed to replace the flex/ eu plug for UK kettle flex and 3 pin plug. (need to obtain tamper proof torx sockets for that!)

How much did you pay for the pump? And I've read that the pump should be self priming, does that mean you can use it to "siphon" from a vessel below the height of the pump?

£120 all-in including Viton seal (as mentioned above) and carriage from Germany.

Yes - this is self-priming and that means it will "suck air"; to what extent I am not sure because I am yet to road-test.

why do you need to change the flex.Flex sold for use in the EU is perfectly ok for use in the uk, we are part of the EU,our wiring reg are supposedly an EU standard and we changed our wiring colours a few years back to "harmonise" with the rest of the EU,just cut the plug off and fit a proper british 13A plug

True.
I'm a bit OCD - I want moulded plug/ flex.
And actually it's too short to reach my sockets!

I'd be keen to hear how you get on with this pump, and how loud it is ands so on. I was looking for a self-priming homebrew pump a while ago; I've changed the design of my system instead but it would still be useful to know for the future.

I have now road tested this pump and can report it is both powerful and relatively quiet.

I intend to to post a demonstration on YouTube in due course....

Looking good Jim, quick one though mate if you don't mind and slightly off topic.
I notice you have a lot of permanent piping, how do you find the clean down at the end of the day and do you clean in place or dismantle bits?

Cheers,
Cooky

Thanks Cooky, I'm afraid up till lately I have been a bit slack with my cleaning.
I always disconnect Kettle, Mash Tun and Lauter and rinse. I used to just flush water through all the Pipes, Chiller and Pump because of the "sterilising" characteristics of copper; now I have started running citric acid through the pipe-work prior to a brew to remove copper oxides which will dissolve in even slightly acidic wort.
