Is Star San safe for babies....?
Is Star San safe for babies....?
No, I'm not feeding children my beer!
However, I have a little one on the way and the other day a thought came to me - why waste money on special steriliser when I could probably use Star San to sterilise bottles and stuff? Is this a reasonable idea or am I totally insane?

Stick to the Milton for your baby mate. One feck up with dosing and "Bye bye baby, baby bye bye" and I don't expect your wife will be happy either.
Re: Is Star San safe for babies....?
Apparently tit doesn't need sterilising. Babies love tit. Starsan + tit = waste of both gifts. Heed the words.
Re: Is Star San safe for babies....?
Yes, well tit is good. But I was thinking for emergencies.. I'm sure someone somewhere has done some research?
Re: Is Star San safe for babies....?
I don't think babies have the same ability to breakdown the non-phosphoric acid part of starsan like yeast can. So no, not in my view
Re: Is Star San safe for babies....?
I just wouldn't go there. Use Milton or a microwave steam jobby
Re: Is Star San safe for babies....?
Ive become a father this year- congratulations to you and your family on the future arrival.
Id recommend a microwave steriliser. Trust me when that baby arrives you won't dream of using starsan. personally i felt better moving onto the microwave one as it just uses water and nothing else.
The wife got ours second hand at an nct sale for a fiver.

That's a pretty good price for a baby. Buying them is so much easier than all that pregnancy nonsense.beerbeerbeer wrote:The wife got ours second hand at an nct sale for a fiver.

(But, no, just don't risk Starsan).
Re: Is Star San safe for babies....?
Starsan is FDA approved for use as a no-rinse sanitizer in food production. Are the people saying no basing their decisions on evidence or just gut feeling?

I've got two little uns, no way I'd let any kind of unnecessary chemicals near em, I'm no hippy and use starsan on myself, but considering how much crap they already get exposed to in the environment why risk additional when the clean alternatives like steam sanitisers are so simple and safe.
That said I did just burn the crap out of my hand opening one if those microwave steamers up the other day!

[adopts flat cap and cockerney accent] Being exposed to all that crap in the environment never did me any harm! I'm a big believer in whatever doesn't kill you.... Cut.
I read somewhere (can't remember where, might've even been on this forum) that the creator of Star San said you could drink a cornie of half beer, half star san and it wouldn't do you any damage. My theory is that if an adult human can assimilate an infinitessimally small amount of Star San then so could probably a baby. Still not sure if I'm willing to test it though!
