Adding Nutrient to stuck fermentation?

Post by PuggledPrune » Sun Dec 16, 2012 8:59 am

I have a better brew Czech pilsner which has stalled at 1018 from an OG of 1052. I've hooked up a heater belt and given it a stir a couple of times which has made no difference. Would yeast nutrient help? It's been in the fv for 3 weeks now so bit concerned I should be getting it off the yeast but if I transfer to secondary I'll lose some of the yeast so reviving the fermentation is unlikely..... What do yous think?

Thanks in advance.

It doesn't sound like its stuck at 1018- with a sg of 1052 then your brew should be around 5% anyway. How many litres have you topped up to? If I wer you I would bottle now regardless, especially after 3 weeks in fv it's more likely than not finished fermenting.

I brewed it short to 20l. I was expecting it to get down to 1010. Ah well if it's finished its finished. Was gonna stick it in secondary in my attic so if clears a bit before bottling.

A bit of nutrient might help, it sure wouldn't hurt.
I'm assuming this was an extract batch so 1.018 may be it.
You can leave it on the yeast for longer than three weeks with no problem.
I'm just here for the beer.

Hi Pugg,

I did the same kit with an SG of 1055. I used a kilo of malt and 250 grams of dextrose.

Mine also stuck at 1020, so I bottled it in 2L pop bottles. I relieved the excess pressure for three days then stashed them in the loft.

It tasted like shite but got you pissed. I think it is just crappy yeast they use.

I would transfer to another bucket and see if it clears a bit, mine did slowly.

Well I've racked it along with a little nutrient. Going to leave it a couple of more days to see what I get.

If I have to resort to repitching yeast, can anyone recommend me a pilsner type yeast?

Cheers!
