Brew day 12/05/07 my second all grain

Post by itmustbemagic » Sat May 12, 2007 10:23 pm

After breaking the duck last week I decided to have a second brew today. I thought I would give it a go without worrying too much about the fine detail of home brew. I made sure I stuck to the right mash temps and after the long discussion on 'Sparge or no sparge' on an earlier post, I decided to batch sparge this time.

My recipe was:-
3.5kg pale malt
.450g Crystal malt
.37g Fuggles
.30g Challenger
&
.15 Fuggles.

All went well with the mash and I have to say the batch sparge was a sinch!
I ran off the first runnings all at once. I then put more heated water onto the grain, gave it a good stir and let it stand for approx 15mins before running it off again. I kept an eye on the total runnings as I wanted to leave myself with enough to top up the boil after losing through evaporation.

The boil went well and eventually I had it cooled down enough for the pitching of the yeast.

Fingers crossed that the the yeast takes over with gusto!

Cheers everyone!
