Hobgoblin (from the brewer)

Post by Cozzyb » Sat Jan 19, 2013 3:15 pm

So noticed quite a few wrong recipes coming up on here regularly and people giving the wrong recipe, despite the brewer giving the actual recipe.

Here is the exact recipe from listening to the brewer talk to the Jamil Show, Can you brew it.

Pale Malt - 90%
Crystal - 7.5%
Chocolate Malt - 2%
Dextrose - 0.5%

IBU's of 36.3
for a 6 gallon batch they said

14g EKG - 60 min
14g Fuggles 60 min
16g Cascade 15min
64g Styrian Goldings 15min

English Ale yeast

Have fun.

I figured as much due to this episode being a couple of years old. But noticed quite a few threads asking for this recipe this week, so why not.

Yes I agree its worth bumping it back up to make it easier to find.

I know the brewer gave this info but I find the cascade an odd element to the recipe. They only state Fuggles and Styrians on their website and other sources and they denied using cascade in Hobgoblin when I asked during a brewery tour there.

Was at Marstons the other day, they brew hobgoblin as they own it, looked at the spec sheet, and it listed the hops as goldings, fuggles and progress, maybe they've changed it, didn't get a look at the addition times though,

It seems odd that they would have to change it. Its not like fuggles or styrians are difficult to get hold of.

the sheet said just 'goldings' could be styrian for all I know, and the progress could just be for bittering.

It's worth noting that the brewer did say they change the recipe every now and then, and he did mention it had changed since it was bought out as a brewery. It definitely mentioned Challenger however, but maybe he was trying to throw them off making the exact beer?

Indeed, may be different now a days as mentioned above, but this should be the most close to 'true' hobgoblin i.e. before the new owner starter making changes.

I had a couple of bottles this week. First time in ages. It is not the beer it used to be. I can believe that the recipe used to have cascade in. However the price of cascade has gone though the roof this harvest so maybe they have dropped it. Either way it is no where near the beer I remember it being. I could have sworn it was darker as well.

Don't think they'll have enough to supply Marstons!!!!! I was going off the price at simply hops. Shot from £35ish / 5kg to £80/5kg
