Broadsword from Ollosson's Real ales for the home brewer

46ltr brew length
80% efficiency assumed

Marris Otter 7.18kg
Carapils 0.9kg
Fuggles (AA 4%) 224g (bittering)
Styrian 54g (aroma hops last 15 min) May increase this still :?
Irish Moss 10g (last 15 min)

Mash 90 min 65 deg c
Boil 90 min
Boil volume 62.25ltr

Target OG 1038
Target FG 1009
Target IBU 53
Original recipe target IBU 36

I used 25ltrs mash liquor
Sparge liquor, I'll stop at 1010 :D

New outing for beertech sparger thingy and vossy's new adjustable return manifold, both working like a treat at the mo

New beertech thingy at work recirculating the runnings

Image

Now that's what I call clear runnings

Grain bed 3" below surface...ish...all it needs is a few goldfish :D

Image

EDIT I Like bitter ales and have adjusted my bittering hops to suit. The original recipe calls for 36 IBU

Scarily high, 61ltrs, egg ladle thingy at the ready to beat the froth back down

Image

FV's sanitising with iodophor soln. I rotate them on the floor to ensure complete sanitation...if there is such a thing

Image

The finished result, 46ltr spot on and not a drop more

Image

My SG target was 1038 and even with a 80% efficiency scaled recipe I still got 1040 8)

I think that's close enough :D

Cheers Wez, your not wrong about the beer
One hick up with the brew. It called for 224g of 4% AA Fuggles. I had one pack in house already but bought another because I didn't have enough.
Naturally I didn't check the AA of the new pack ti'll I came to use it and it was 4.2%.

Now this pack contributed 144g to the total hop bill, the other 80g was 4%AA.
I need to work out the revised IBU at some point.

Also the inner hoppy demon  got the better of me and I used 50% more aroma hops ie, 81g.......should smell nice :D

Just looked at my profile and either I stop brewing  or I have to buy more shiny corny's

At 13.1% alpha it'll work out a smidgen over 20IBU. That's not much but Munich Helles isn't a bitter beer.

Fermenters with airlocks are cheaper than cornis, you can keep beer in there until you have a corni spare.

btw have you ordered that bottle filler yet
A good point ! How many 60ltr fermentors I can leave dotted around the house remains to be seen though. I think 'she that has no name' might have something to say about it

I'm going to try a pint or two of the Old Rambler first before paying for a bottle filler  though you never know :D

I've tested this ale tonight and it's the hoppiest ale I've made to date.

It's stilll green and I can't wait to see what it's like when it's matured.

Anyone who likes their hoppy beers give this recipe a go

Though I did double the aroma hops and a good decision it was too, cheers SD
