Whiffy Odour in new fermentaton bin

Post by breisleach » Tue Jan 29, 2013 10:40 pm

Just bought a new 25l fermentation bin with tap. There is a whiffy odour from its insides and lid.
I've washed it with detergent and rinsed it out three times but still whiffy.
What suggestions for trying to remove smell; bleach and rinse or bicarb of soda or milton soak?
I've filled it with some water and tasted it with no obvious taste.
Any ideas?

I asked a similar question recently, in case you want to skim the responses: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=56921&hilit=+barrel

I dumped a small box of baking powder in mine and I've been shaking it up and setting it back down a different way up each time for a couple weeks. Cheap and easy. I'm not in a rush to use it, so I haven't opened it to check yet, but I'll let you know when I do.

For what it's worth, most people seem to report the smell of the plastic doesn't make it all the way to the bottled beer, so you're probably fine to start brewing and it will go away on its own.

Bleach solution. Fill it with 250 cc thin bleach to 25 L. Leave 24 Hrs.

Empty (carefully)
Rinse 2 - 3 times with about 2L warm water.

Get rid of any residual smell by dissolving 1 campden tablet in 1 L warm water. Shake and leave for 30-60 mins.

Rinse with clean tap water.

If that doesn't work, recycle it.

I'd try bicarb of soda. It works a treat on sandwich boxes.
