Session beer with First Gold

Post by TheMumbler » Sun Feb 10, 2013 4:06 pm

I am thinking along the lines of the recipe below. Possibly with some tweaking of the hops and maybe with a bit of elderflower.

Brewlength 23l
OG 1039
FG 1010
IBU 32 (tinseth)
SRM 10

Grist
1.50 kg Maris Otter
1.00 kg Munich
0.50 kg Flaked Oats
0.50 kg Malted Oats
0.20 kg CaraPils
0.20 kg Crystal

Quantity Hop
30g First Gold (7.5) @ 30 mins
30g First Gold (7.5) @ 15 mins
20g First Gold (7.5) @ 0 mins
20g First Gold (7.5) dry hop

Mauribrew Ale yeast

Any advice and/or comments would be great

I have no idea about how your recipe would work out but, I have a fantastic session ale recipe that uses First Gold..

Yum. I expect the fruity First Gold hops combined with the weird melony aspects of that Mauri yeast will be really cool. I'd probably substitute the Munich with more base malt to keep from overpowering those hops and yeast aspects, but of course it's up to you. Happy brewing!

Food for thought Seymour, that would make the grist pretty similar to the last hoppy session I did which turned out OK. I'm just pondering getting some more body in there.

You should get quite a bit of body with all that munich, but it can also dry the beer in my experience. As Seymour suggested half the munich and up the pale it will still have a good mouthfeel to it.
Hop schedule looks lovely, First Gold is a very nice hop.

I think Seymour was suggesting subbing all of the Munich, but I could be wrong.

I might go with 500g, as you suggest and see what happens.

Also thanks to Uncle Joshua for his recipe. I am aiming for more in the way of late hops - an English take on an APA I suppose. First Gold seem like a good hop for that sort of a beer.

Yeah, I was, but Scuppeteer's split-the-difference suggestion is better.

You're exactly right, First Gold is perfect for that sort of thing. I love St Peters Organic English Ale, which is entirely First Gold hops and very nicely balanced.

looks good Floyd, was that 150g of wet hops?

Also your kitchen units look pretty similar to mine, not that it is important :)

we've moved now sadly. I liked that kitchen.

No, the hops were sun dried. Delicious they were. I couldn't believe how orange zesty they tasted. I completely fell in love with First Gold after this brew. I reckon the magic happens when they are dry hopped.

A decent dry hop quantity at that.

I brewed this as per the second recipe, so I'll let you know how it went. Dry hops should go in in the next couple of days.
