Gales Festival Mild - no Torrified wheat!

Post by Goulders » Sun Jan 13, 2013 5:48 pm

Hi All

Water is heating up and grain weighed out but just found I have no torrified wheat - thought I had some! #-o

Recipe only calls for 81g. Only thing I have is rolled oats.

Doe the recipe need it? I can't see 81 g adding much to 23l.

Cheers

Oats are a perfect substitute. They serve the same purpose as the unmalted wheat: a little fuller body, bready mouthfeel, improved head retention. Go for it!

Gone so far ok, but trying to get the kids to bed etc!

That's a fairly small amount, I wouldn't worry too much about leaving it out.
I'm just here for the beer.

I use oats in my Honorable Member Mild recipe.

Good choice, you won't be disappointed. The silky mouthfeel, everlasting foam, and sticky Belgian lace are gonna blow you away.

Just finish this thread off. The slurry from the previous brew worked well (ESB [Brewlabs TV3). Down to 1.013 from 1.053. Tasted really good out of the FV and now 40 bottles done.

Not much head retention on this one and 23l was primed with about 50g of sugar

Until the syringe method used!

This is very tasty and probably the best English pint I have done. Really enjoying this. Use slurry from the ESB previously. The ESB was probably underpitched and doesn't have the depth of flavour so thinking about using hop oils.

Very happy with this pint. I will probably use pale heat malt next time and up the quantities.

Does 81g of Torrefied Wheat (or oats) really add anything to a 23litre brew?

Or is this another one of those weird grain bill additions that just serves to complicate things, but remains in there as some kind of brewer's superstition, like when I see recipes calling for small amounts of Vienna or Munich malt?
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Probably adds some flavour (at least the oats), but I would add more next time as the head disappears really quickly. It really is a nice tasting beer though.
