Meow

Post by themadhippy » Fri Mar 29, 2013 7:30 pm

Couple of weeks back i was forced to consume a few pints of hook nortons lion, which i think i enjoyed,i blame the purity ubu that was also being forced on me for the lack of accurate memory.Whilst musing wot to brew this weekend the local camra rag fell through the letter box, inside an article about hookys new ale ,lion, including a few clues to its make up,problem solved lets brew a lion.According to the article its " brewed with marris otter (90%),aromatic malt, crystal malt and caramalt, four hops are added, fuggle and golding at the start, bramling cross as a late addition and cascade in the hop back, with a bittering in the low 20's and a bright pale bronze colour"
check the stocks,no aromatic malt, munich will do,no goldings, got first gold, well its got gold in the name so close enough ,no cascade what’s in here beginning with a C, challanger? yea that'll do,A quick fiddle with beer engine and we get
For 25 litres
Pale Malt 9 lbs. 4.1 oz 4200 grams 87.1%
Munich Malt 0 lbs. 14.0 oz 400 grams 8.3%
Crystal Malt 0 lbs. 3.9 oz 110 grams 2.3%
Caragold 0 lbs. 3.9 oz 110 grams 2.3%
Fuggle 3.6 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 20 grams 26.7%
First Gold 7.8 % 90 mins 0 lbs. 0.5 oz 15 grams 20% (all that was left in the freezer)
Bramling Cross 5.5 % 15 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 20 grams 26.7%
Challenger 7.6 % 0 mins 0 lbs. 0.7 oz 20 grams 26.7
Yeast safale us05
Original Gravity: 1.043
Bitterness: 25 EBU
Colour: 13 EBC
Actually ended up with 29 litres at 1.042, so 4 litres in a demijohn with a random yeast sachet left over from a kit. it looks a bit darker than the lion i remember drinking and most probably will taste nothing like it,but who cares, its beer.
