wilburs SNPA clone
wilburs SNPA clone
Edited recipe:
Going to try my hand again at a SNPA clone, after getting a harsh bitterness from the flavour hops in my previous try (perle at 30 mins) i've decided to use a hopping schedule suggested by wilbur with a tweak or two, cheers.
5 gallon batch
5 Kilograms Maris Otter
550g crystal 60
8.5g Magnum hops @ 60 minutes pellet 13.1%
10g Pearle hops @ 60 minutes whole 8%
30g Cascade hops @ 10 minutes whole 6.8%
30g Cascade hops @ 0 minutes whole 6.8%
My cascades are quite high at 6.8 % does anyone think i need to use a bit less at 10 min and a bit more at 0.
Water heating as i type.
mash 66-67C

i was concerned because my cascades are 6.8 % where as the recipes online for this have cascades at 5.4 %.
I went ahead with my revised schedule ie 20g at 10 and 40g at flameout (only seen your reply just now).
This is to please the masses so if its a little shy on bitterness flavour and aroma it'll probably be ok (not everyones a hophead like the typical homebrewer) i still have my previous super charged SNPA to enjoy for myself

Really happy with how this session went, 5 gallons at 1054, the wort tastes really nice even before fermentation and the colour isn't a kick in the ass away from SNPA.
Chilled the boil down much quicker by dropping the IC right into the boiler instead of messing about with trying to hang it on the side.
My modifed hop strainer (doubled the amount of slots with a hacksaw) which previously had blocked up real bad with 80g of hops dealt with roughly the same amount of hops no problem.
Also the wort was as clear as i've managed so far, i think chilling the boil down quicker and having a hop strainer that actually works made a big difference.
Everything went so well its a cert that this is the batch that gets infected

Does anyone do the clonebrew recipes, are they any good, i have the book as well but i've never got around to making one. Normally i just flick through the book to pick out styles i might like and then go hunting for a recipe on-line.BarryNL wrote:I put this on another thread but, interesting to put here for comparison. This is the Clone Brews version:
I have noticed that they always seem to skimp on the amount of speciality grains compared to the recipes i see most people on here formulating.
Take this one for instance i used 550g crystal 60 but they recommend only about 100g (ok i know i may have overdone on the 60L it but surely not by fivefold).
I use 340g of xtal 60 for a 24.6 Liter batch, 550g will just make it a bit sweeter. The Nottingham should work just fine, you basically want a yeast that will really chomp away and leave a nice clean crisp dry beer.
I wonder if we are talking about the same xtal 60? In the States we use the SRM Lovibond scale, on your side of the pond you use the EBC scale.
What we call xtal 60 Lovibond would be 120 EBC, or 60 EBC would be 30 Lovibond.
