Question/help on barreling

Post by andyctr » Thu May 24, 2007 6:28 pm

Evening all,
I have dropped a slight clanger, brewed last Sunday and all went well, :D realised I am heading away for a weeks break this weekend and I don't think fermenting will have been completed by the time I go, question is what are the implications if I barrel too early over say leaving it a week or so and perhaps barreling a bit late, I am using a hamblton and bard pressure barrel which obviously has a safety valve on but I am unsure on the outcome. Any experiences/advice/help would be most welcome.

I would check the gravity - if it close to racking then transfer. However if you are still a way off from your racking gravity then stick a lid on the fermentor and leave it until you come back.

I have had few beers where they have stayed in the primary for a couple of weeks and there have been no problems with the final product. I think some of the guys discussed this a while back and they mentioned that up to three weeks was safe.

Thanks guys, Daab, I am heading away tomorrow eve or sat am and back next Sunday, am the OG was 1055 and its currently at 1030 so about half way through, I don't have a secondry fermenter at present but could leave the lid loose on the fermenting bin, time is not an issue I don't mind if its in the barrel a week late I would prefer to take the safest option and save the brew than cut a corner and see it spoilt. would leaving the lid just placed over the FB be OK.

Daab, just checked again and yes maybe a fraction under 1030, can leave the lid off until I go, should I leave the lid off for the following days or would it be better to leave it loosly on or partially on, I usually only leave the lid on the first night after putting in fermenter until head has formed and then leave it open for the remaining time until racking.
