Hi Guys,Just bought my first bottle of hobgoblin as an experiment,as i am essentially a lager drinker, but thought the best way to learn about brewing is to taste some brews and see what flavours i can or cannot distinguish so i'm gonna try spitfire next...
Anyway have to say i didnt really like hobgoblin it tasted a bit like a rough treacle toffee to me and i may have detected a hint of liquorice(or not).....anyhoo just to get me started does anybody know what is in hobgblin, hops etc to make it taste how it does dont need a complete recipe just want to link flavours to names and numbers etc... many thanks Dave
Hobgoblin
Re: Hobgoblin
The problem with some of the large brewery beers/brands is that the recipe doesn't necessarily remain set in stone over the years, and they are often designed to disguise any strong or predominant flavours, blending hops and malts to deliver a "balanced" beer.
Try to obtain some single-hop beers if you can source them e.g. Oakham Citra. At least that way you know what the predominant flavour is, particularly in hop-biased beers which is what most, not all, single-hop beers tend to focus on.

Re: Hobgoblin
yeah, sorry, didn't really answer your question though!
There is a thread here on the hobgoblin recipe.... enjoy!
EDIT:
By the way:
(Bobek hops are a type of the more general "styrian goldings", which in turn are a type of fuggle!)
