Adnams Broadside

I had a beautiful pint of Broadside last week at the Hare and Hounds on Werneth Low, Hyde.

Made me really want to nail this one myself. But has anyone got a definitive recipe. Is it Boudica hops I'm looking for?

Nope, it's not. It's First Gold - all up front.The grain bill is nothing but pale malt with added caramel colouring. Target gravity is
1047, fg = 1014, abv = 4.7%v/v, colour = 45, bitterness =33.

The key is the yeast. It's a dual strain and I'm not sure any of the putative commercial equivalents are the same thing.

No, Adnams unique dual-strain yeast is not available for purchase from any labs. However, Adnams allows the original yeast to go into the mini-kegs for authentic cask-conditioning. So, other than begging the dregs from a spent full-size cask at your local pub, this is the only way I know of to acquire the real thing. Even so, one of the strains is much more aggressive than the other, so the ratio will drift further and further from Adnams' own target with each repeated use.

It's funny Whitelabs or Wyeast haven't gone after this one. With their setups it would be a doddle to culture up some minicasks, separate the yeasts, reculture and make a commercial blend (I mean it is what they do for a living)... Maybe they have already ? Maybe the results were not what they expected ?

They offer a few of their own blends, like an easy mix of all three Trappist strains in one package, but as far as I know, everything else they sell is pure, single strain. It's a lot of trouble to manage a consistent dual-strain wherein one desperately outcompetes the other in short order, y'know?

Hey Seymour,

There is no need for them to culture dual strains simultaneously in the same vessel. They would culture both individually and blend before packaging. They would just need to know the ratio of strain A to strain B - They do sell directly pitchable vials so it should be fine for at least one brew.
