Re: Hop Growing 2013
Ive got a constant battle with mine at the moment, as the plant had already reached the eaves, I`ve used the gutter brackets as away to support the twine, the twine being horizontal. Hop plants being hop plants want to grow upwards so everyday I go out and encourage them to grow horizontally. I missed a day and the little bar***** managed to get into the guttering.

Thanks for the offercrafty john wrote:I will be splitting my First Gold next spring if you want a cutting, you're not too far from me.

I have the same problem too, unless the twine is in free air they just try to go up.barneey wrote:Ive got a constant battle with mine at the moment, as the plant had already reached the eaves, I`ve used the gutter brackets as away to support the twine, the twine being horizontal. Re: Hop Growing 2013
An overgrown place where quite a few shoots are finally showing up. I made some poles for them to grow up on:

A bit late up here north:

This one looks different, leaves are round:

There is a spring next to that big rock and if the summer is very wet the roots will be waterlogged and there will be no hops at all. The plan is to later dig up the hops, and make a raised bed for them against this south-facing wall, and put some strings up the wall to the roof:

My Prima Dona, a dwarf hop, on the plant-unfriendly north-facing wall in the less than fertile soil is currently beating the pants off the Cascade that has the south-facing, "cared for" spot.
Still, at least they are alive, unlike many of my veg plants that have been all but annihilated by mice and slugs.

Re: Hop Growing 2013
Greenfly already starting on my new Progress pot. Not infested but they're there and I saw ladybird larvae too.
What's best treatment to reduce greenfly but not affect hops or ladybird larvae much?
Last year Challenger was decimated by greenfly.

Nice, I really like how you have separated the bines across the fence. How far along will they grow?DC wrote:Hi all, Just thought I would post a few pics of my hops to show how their getting on
Re: Hop Growing 2013
Hi Andy, The hops have the full length of the fence to grow along at the minute, I do have the option of continuing the string up to the next level between the panels and back along the opposite way. I don't want to tempt fate by adding the extra string just yet, incase the hops don't grow that far.
Full length of fence

Option to go back on itself

Re: Hop Growing 2013
I can see this thread getting competitive
I`ll have to get the tape measure out and measure the length of mine

It's not the size of your hops that matter, but how you use 'em.barneey wrote:...I`ll have to get the tape measure out and measure the length of mine

Re: Hop Growing 2013
I take it from that reply that you have a dwarf variety
In all serious tho the only reason for me growing hops is for green hopped beer
