I recieved an order this morning for some malt. There was crushed pale malt, but the amber and crystal malts were whole.Do I need to crush these, or is this how it comes ready for mashing?Cheers Andy

You will need to crush them, this is a bit of an art in itself but a simple way of doing it would be to put the grain in a bag a bit at a time and crack it with a rolling pin or wooden mallet.

I use a rolling pin, but its a pain in the ass for larger than 500 grams

I'll remeber next time to buy crushed.Luckily I have a super wizzy juice extractor ( Gold Star 3000) that crushes nuts (so to speak), so I'll give that a try.

Just be careful you don’t over crush your grain, you don’t want to turn it into flour

Try a small amount and see what the results are.

You could possibly also use a food processor and give a small pulse blitz.

Belt it with a rolling pin and with each blow spit the following words out through gritted teeth

must-buy-pre-crushed-must-buy-pre-crushed

Good job it wasn't the pale, you'd be in a bit of bother as the degree of crush is important in the base malt, not to mention the larger quantity. On the speciality malts, perhaps less important as they're usually used in much smaller ammounts.

Or just brew a pale ale and consign the whole grains to the waste bin of experience. :)
