Let's hope not - these AG brews are a lot of work but if it makes a great beer its all worth it!

Oh, and here's the label ready to go (Hobgoblin clone, geddit?):

Well, it's coming along - only another 10 days or so and at least some of this will get drunk. :)

Aaaaaargh! Clear glass! In full daylight!!!!! Are you MAAAAAAAAAD!!!!! Beer is like Dracula...expose it to sunlight and it dies! Brown bottles for beer. Brown stops UV from turning your precious brew into lightstruck kak.

...it's a Corona bottle as well. Shame on you!

Yes! And then bury it 6' underground as the alphagamma zed-waves can penetrate shed walls and 5' of soil! If it's a lead lined coffin, so much the better :D

On a serious note - clear glass is not a good idea IF your beer is going to be exposed to a source of UV, ie sunlight, or a flourescent tube.

If it isn't, then obviously, no problem.

You also want to be careful with 'lager' bottles as the glass is thinner and more likely to shatter under pressure.

Hopkins managed to ferment his first mini-mash attempt in a glass demijohn sitting in his spare room and then bottled some of it in clear bottles and so far hasn't noticed any lightstrike in the flavour :-k . One of my last brews was knackered by just letting it sit in plastic fermentor under the same sort of conditions #-o  don't make no sense.

No disrespect to Hoppkins intended, but many brewers, particularly inexperienced ones can get so used to off tastes that they don't notice them, and a lot of people are used to the taste of lightstruck beer as a lot of commercial beer sold in clear glass is afflicted with it. Caledonian switched to brown bottles recently for that very reason.

Isn't light strike more of a problem with lighter tasting ales and lagers? The likes of Spitfire and Bishops doo dah come in clear bottles, to no ill effect that I have observed.

Heh, I will plead that it's only one in clear glass so I can see what it looks like - the rest is safely tucked up in brown bottles. I'd also like to make clear that my wife drank the original contents - with a slice of lime in the neck #-o

Here's most of my beer to keep you happy :) (I'd like particular attention paid to the one's which obviously once held Delirium Tremens!)

You think not? I think they both taste rubbish in bottle - unrecognisable from draught.

Hmmm … *sound of Matt's tired brain ticking*.

I wouldn't mind a little more opinion from you Steve / anyone … did you specifically mean this is due to light-strike, or is this just an inevitable difference between bottled and draught?

In a previous thread I remember DaaB said he could not find light strike in clear bottled ales and I had based my comment on this and my own findings (albeit that my taste buds have not been benchmarked :) )

Cheers,
Matt
