Splitting a Batch Corny/Bottles

Post by Wez » Thu May 31, 2007 8:54 pm

I'll be brewing a batch of my Fledgling Bitter which is to be taken to a BBQ late summer, I want to put this in my new corny keg so it's easy to transport my questions are:

a) The Corny i got from Norm i think is a 18L one, is that 18L of beer in the keg (are they a bit bigger, like 20L?)

I would like to stick to making 25L batches and bottle the remaining 7L into 14 bottles so:

b) From what I understand it's best to rack the beer into an airlocked FV after fermentation has completed to clear before racking to Corny and gassing, is there anything else I need to do and also at what point should i take the 7L for bottling? Oh, and what about priming?

I keep in primary for 10 to 12 days (with lid snapped on and no airlock) and fine after 9 or 10 days then straight to corni and bottles. Bottles v clear in few days - corni a little longer

1/2 tsp sugar per bottle

Sounds good, so you fine in the primary FV (what finings do you use) and also doesn't that mix up the yeast slurry? One more thing if i bottle after fining how do i get carbonation?

Still enough yeast as not perfectly clear and 1/2 tsp per bottle is enough for more but if you like it fizzy try 1 tsp.

Finings do gunk up slurry a bit but I dont reuse yeast so no bother

ps Just noticed daabs advice - go with that as I am a trainee bottler ( although not had problems with the 6 or so brews I have bottled so far ....)

I want to be able to transport the corny without risk of clouding up the beer so ideally from what has been said here i should....

leave in primary until fermentation is over

rack what i'm going to bottle into bottles before fining with 1/2 tsp sugar

add finings to the beer thats left mixing up the yeast slurry and all

wait for it to clear

rack clear beer to corny and gas it up......

Right?

Don't remix the yeast slurry back into suspension

Yeah I thought that didn't sound right

re written.

leave in primary until fermentation is over

rack what i'm going to bottle into bottles before fining with 1/2 tsp sugar

rack beer off slurry and add finings to the beer

wait for it to clear

rack clear beer to corny and gas it up......

Right?/ Better?

That's how I do it

I did try fining in primary but found there would always be some active yeast in the slurry clouding things up :?
