Marmite as a Yeast?........
Hello Everyone,
My neice (24 yr old) is starting to make TC`s, she was in Wilkos today buying Yeast and some random homebrewer said to her `don`t buy Yeast, use a tsp of Marmite instead`. I`ve never heard of this before, would it, could it work? Would you get the Marmite taste in your brew? All answers greatly appreciated!

I love marmite and would love to make beer with it but as far as i know its a by product of making beer so don't think it's possible. I think we could all be making home brew marmite with our trub though?!
Re: Marmite as a Yeast?........
I think Bert's right. Marmite is made from yeast, but it's heavily broken down, so there would not be any live yeast left. I know of one UK brewery that presses their yeast into a solid after fermentation and sells it to be used in products like this.
Re: Marmite as a Yeast?........
Maybe she was looking at yeast nutrient - then at least the random homebrewers comment would have made at least a bit of sense.

Heard of people using old bread to provide yeast to make beer / alcohol - its popular in US prisons, forms the basis of "pruno" or prison hooch
Mine you, there have been several cases of death by botulism where alcohol was made this way so i'd not be doing it myself

Hello all,
I am the niece, and I can inform you the the marmite cider has taken off and is going good it is 2 days slower than the other stuff but hey I don't need it until the 31st so that's fine, I recommend that everyone should experiment with it.
1tsp for every gallon

Marmite is made by lysing (splitting them open or dissolving them) the yeast cells with a high sodium brine. The yeast are long dead.

Re: Marmite as a Yeast?........
You still need yeast, but you can use very small quantities of marmite as yeast nutrient. It's the same as using yeast hulls or boiled bread yeast.
The only difference is that you do have to be careful as too much would impart a salty/metallic taste to the brew, due to the very high salt content of marmite.
And yes, marmite is indeed made from breaking down brewers yeast "waste". If you drive around the roads of Burton, you'll often see the tankers from the marmite factory collecting the bulk yeast "waste".
Plus, every now and then, they do "special" runs. So far, there was a "Valentines day" version of Marmite, made from yeast waste from champagne and sparkling wine yeasts, another "special" made from the yeast waste from Guiness and another from the yeast waste from the Marstons brewery. All "limited edition" Marmite, and of course, priced accordingly.........

My tadpoles all drowned! Alcohol poisoning I suspect! Never listening to you again.
