Beer engine refurb

Post by scotia » Fri Aug 16, 2013 4:21 pm

I picked up three beer engines from fleabay for £42 last week two Homark and a Higene they were in a sorry state so I have started refurbishing them.

One of the plynths was damaged badly so have ordered a new one along with three seal kits.I then sanded down the other two ready for stain and varnish.

All pump parts were placed in pails along with pearcetic acid solution over night then scrubbed with scotchbrite and washed in clean water.

The mild steel cover for the Higene pump was in a sorry state and one of the Homark covers was missing so i fabed up a nice stainless cover and made one for the homark unit that was missing.

I have just dropped off the polished brass pieces at a car body shop that a friend runs he is going to give them a coat of laquer to keep the shine and save me polishing every week.

Just waiting for the parts to arrive, hopefully I have enough photos to enable me to assemble in the correct order. :)

It was supposed to be a classic Ducati scrambler I started restoring earlier this year but once I free up my work schedule I have all the parts together and sheet cut ready to roll and form the cylinders and shallow cones for the bases hopefully by the weekend. :)

Aye! it used to be radial line development but I have built myself a cnc plasma cutter (I picked up a controller and stepper motors for much cheapness so not as clever as it sounds :) ) and have a program to do the development now I need to sus out how to form the knuckle though instead of knocking up the edge by hand. I wont be able to do that on this set as they were offcuts from inserting manway's and by halfing a sheet for the cylinders 1250 = 2x 625 the cones are 500 o/d the volume will be a little tight for 100ltr though, the offcuts on the length will do for lids and hopefully a hopback.

Excellent. I wish you'd done this before I started with mine. Took me an age just to pluck up the courage to start.
Great job.

Must admit, I`ve got a GK pump just sitting in the garage, just waiting. When I start mine I`ll think I take as many photo`s of the dismantle just encase I end up with a few spare bits at the end.

When I was speaking to the guy at CFBS he said he may have a pdf on either the Homark or Higene may be worth enquiring about the GK which he is going to send over, a couple of pics will be good but it looks pretty straight forward. Hopefully my seals will be here for Wednesday as I have everything spread out on the weld bench.
When I picked up the brass from the spray shop someone had handed in a Angram pump to the guy saying that I would probably have more use for it than he had. It looked a bit grubby and the handle was missing but on further inspection I dont think it has ever been used as it is too clean inside, this will do for an outside party setup. :)
