Malt Miller / Neals yeast

Post by dean_wales » Tue Sep 17, 2013 1:19 pm

Hi guys,

Is there any information out there as to what strains these yeasts are? It would be really useful to know when putting together recipes and to reduce trial/error batches.

Currently available are:

NBS Ale Yeast
NBS Ale Yeast 2
NBS Belgian Saison Yeast
NBS West Coast Style Yeast
NBS Weiss Yeast

They are much more attractively priced that some of the big name yeasts which have got more expensive lately.

If it is commercially sensitive in anyway for Rob I am happy not to discuss and close thread.

Dean.

West coast seems very similar to US-05 to me.

I assume from the name that it is BRY-97

That would be my guess, I've only used it the once but it seemed to settle more than US05 which I have used a few times so BRY-97 seems like the obvious candidate.

Since Rob doesn't seem to object, I'll speculate:

On the basis of there only being one other dried Saison yeast that I know of (Belle Saison) and assuming that I'm right about the West Coast one then one possibility is that they are all repackaged yeasts from that manufacturer (Danstar). The NBS line up seems to fit that range. That said, I don't know that Danstar allow this and it is entirely possible that Rob has another line of supply that I don't know about. For example, I have a feeling that I read somewhere online (so it must be true) that Mangrove Jack's yeasts are actually made in the UK and I haven't used their yeast at all. I wouldn't mind trying their burton union yeast.

Is there any chance of a dried Kolsch yeast along the lines of K97 Rob?

I was speculating too that they would be from one of the existing lines and can now see that yes the Danstar range does fit.

I am sure that there is no harm in discussing this as they are not advertised or sold as repacked versions (which was the issue with S04 a while back).

Still, I will leave it at that as that is a good enough guess at the strains for me and Beersmith!

You should ask Rob perhaps?

I'm confused, Rob has already posted in the thread. What is your issue here?

not sure there is an "issue" I think he's just suggesting that if you asked Rob what other yeasts they behave like then you might get a better answer than speculation.

A two page thread in May in which the question is not answered and in which Pattered Ale does not post. Conclusive evidence of both his reasoning and the "done to death nature" of this topic. Thanks ... so much... for your insight and help.

I would agree, hardly done to death...

Anyway I think we all got the message - Danstar!

Move along people! Move along!

I thought in the other thread he said no to Danstar?

Take another look... No to Fermentis.

The range and Rob's non-denial are enough clues for me.

Calm yourself fella. I have always found Rob to be a very helpful and straightforward chap. My reasoning thus, is ask him about his products.
