Muntons Rose Wine Kit

I've recently put a small kit of the above on for the mrs. Its a 6 bottle wine kit.
The instructions more or less say to fill the DJ upto about 3 1/2 litres add the yeast wait 3 days then top upto the 4.5 litre mark.

Now coz of the above I cant get an OG as i've added the yeast as per the instructions.

Are they telling you to fill the DJ upto 3.5 litres incase it gets OVER excited? and to leave room so it doesn't explode everywhere?

Its just I like to get OG and FG from my kits so I have a rough idea of the % of my brews.
