Hop Filter?
Hop Filter?
I've ordered a couple of these stainless mesh aquarium filters to play with. I reckon they are probably suitable for use as hop filters. I may remove the rubber seal and replace with something else as I doubt the rubber will be stamped "food safe". Anyone here using these?

Re: Hop Filter?
stuff for fish/aquarium use is generally safe (at aquarium temps) as some fish are more fragile..
my only concern is that those may be a bit small.

Re: Hop Filter?
I've been using a rolled up sheet of vivarium mesh for the past five years, approx 2.5x16cm, so if I take the end cap off the smaller one I'm hoping I can stuff it into the larger one.Fil wrote:my only concern is that those may be a bit small.

Re: Hop Filter?
I did my first brew with one last week. 100g of leaf hops, 23 litre brew length. Absolutely perfect. Fast drain and no bits.
Here is the filter in my plastic boiler

and the filter laid out flat

lastly disassembled (except for the reducer which is just lightly crimped into the elbow)

Fitting the filter: it is wedged into the tap then rotated so the filter rests in the sunken channel around the edge of the boiler to hold it in place.
The clear plastic tube is a loose fit into the filter, so the black tube sits entirely in the filter and expands the clear plastic, stopping it coming out and extending the vacuum.

Re: Hop Filter?
Would this mesh work with pellets?
And how similar is it to your standard kitchen metal sieve?

Re: Hop Filter?
I've never used pellets.
Mesh is probably a bit finer than a kitchen strainer, not as fine as the Ikea splash guard I use for mashing, but finer than the vivarium mesh I used to make my previous hop filter (which was also trouble-free).
