Brewers Choice irish Stout

Post by Mrobs » Tue Jun 12, 2007 8:49 am

Hi
Just going to start this kit and ordered Brupaks dark malt extract to go with it, however have just noticed the shop have sent me the amber malt extract instead, will i be ok with this or does it alter the end product too much for a stout?
Or just had a thought, is amber same as dark
Thanks for any guidance.

I don't know about the brew, but when i bought SME for my stout, there was a choice of light, medium and dark. That was Muntons, so there's probably a difference between amber and dark with Brupaks.

As long as you've not broken the seal, I should imagine any shop would exchange it.

Good luck.

I think the amber is quite light, but I'm sure I've read that others have made the same kit up with light spraymalt with good results - so I reckon your amber LME will be fine! 8)

We used light spray malt with our Coopers Stout kit and it looks ok to me, tasted ok out of primary too.

Seems a strange change of name from 'dark to 'amber', I always thought 'amber' was yellowy!

It shouldn't make that much difference at all, in fact probably none.

The main grain in any stout, whether that be kit or all grain) would be pale anyway, the colouring should be coming from the roast & black malts (which in a stout kit there should be plenty of in any case).

To be honest I could never taste the difference between light, amber, dark and probably never will, I did notice vast colour differences when brewing a pale ale but never when brewing a stout.

In the Muntons range they quote their colours as being:
Amber 16 - 20ebc
Dark 50 - 60

With the dark malt they do use chocolate & crystal malts which might enhance the taste of the brew a tad but the use of amber in my view certainly wouldn't spoil the taste and I'd say certainly wouldn't bring the colour noticeably down (but I stand by to be proved wrong when you post a pic of the said ale)

Have just checked Brupaks site and they don't appear to sell a dark, they have pale and amber listed = which means maybe the shop thought amber was the "dark" compared to pale....who knows.
cheers & best regards

Marc
