Dual coil immersion chiller
Dual coil immersion chiller
Hi guys, decided to build a twin coil immersion chiller that would run the coils independantly of each other (paralell???) as opposed to going round in a single loop (series) - maybe I got that the wrong way round but you get the picture.
Bought 25m of 10mm copper coil, 3m of 15mm straight copper pipe and a selection of reducers and elbows. Outer coil was made around a large paint bucket and the inner one around my CO2 cylinder. Held rigid with copper bars drilled out and threaded onto both coils - THAT was the biggest pain to be honest.
Tested it today (cold ground water I know) and got the following:
13:50 = 100 deg c
13:55 = 43 deg c
14:00 = 23 deg c

Connectors are temporary until I get some more JG fittings.

I would love to see this but we cant see your pics. To use photobucket open the image in photobucket. Choose copy inage URL. Then select 'Img' in the forum file and past in the centre '' ...watch the brackets as they often get moved when you paste. Fecking ancient forum crappy software.
Just a question your 10 min chill, what batch size was it ?

Thanks for sorting out the pics, I can never seem to get them to work no matter how closely I follow the instructions! Total cost for the build was around £60.

Far9410.....cheers. Hardest part was threading the supports onto the coils.
Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
Setmash, the chill from 100 degrees to 23 degrees was with 26 litres.
Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
Thank you , that's a really nice piece of kit you've constructed , not bad for sixty quid....

Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
Top Job!! Very impressive chilling time too.. my similar 10m dbl coil, unspaced, and with a single feed/return was less than 50% as efficient, taking twice as long, and needing a stir throughout too..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate

Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
same with mine fil, looking back shoulda gone all out with 25m instead, or even 8mm pipe. i often just chill to ~40C and leave it overnight and transfer/pitch in the morning, but sometimes it'd be nice to get it all out of the way immediately. gotta decide if it's worth adding some more coils or starting afresh now i got a better idea of what i want..
pauliet, do you know what volume of water it used while chilling. certainly looks very nicely made gotta say

Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
Very smart! one suggestion is to make sure hose connections are well out side of the side of the boiler not over the top. Depending on how hoses are connected hose pipe can often over time work lose, filling the boiler with cold water. Bitter experience

Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
On a sort of related topic I have 2 x 10 metre coils of 8mm copper tubing and I am not sure what is best to do with these.
is it best used for a Herms coil in a 6 litre thermopot that I have or is the smaller diameter tube suitable for a wort chiller?
I am not sure if the higher surface area/volume ratio makes it better for heating or cooling (or both)?
Also not sure if I can get 8mm - 15mm adaptors without getting too big and clumsy.
Any ideas?
Just had a late afterthought how would the small diameter affect the flow rate and would it be viable for Herms coil pumping 25 - 50 litres through a small diameter tube?

Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
dunno about herms, but 8mm would make a good chiller

Re: Dual coil immersion chiller
this chiller is a must make for me, it answers all the questions, plate chiller is faster but more of a faff to clean, well its not faster than that.

I used these when I built a CFC:GeeThom wrote: Also not sure if I can get 8mm - 15mm adaptors without getting too big and clumsy.
