Sounds a lot like the batch sparge v fly sparge debate - do which what works best for you and your system.

I use the pitching calculator as found on www.mrmalty.com. For the record the creator of the calculator - Jamil is a award winning homebrewer. I think Steve F has exchanged some info with him.

I have certainly noticed an improvement in fermentation once I focused on better aeration and pitching rates.

I may try "extra" yeast sometime as an experiment then again I may just keep pocketing the difference to spend on shiny bits and bobs.

JHBF has, and will always remain, a great introduction and middle ground to brewing of all types...

There are grounds however for more indepth conversations with regards to the details of brewing, which should not be confusing to all, but should be freely available to all those, who wish to involve themselves in these matters

I do not profess to be at a stage to include myself intelligently in these matters, but I do like to look from the sidelines....learning all the time

These complex issues will seem confusing to a lot of people, however we can't afford to let the people who have progressed their knowlege to this level. to slip from our forum

Right thats the preparation done, MT sterilising overnight, mash liquor sitting waiting in the boiler, grain all weighed out (see below) you can see the Amber Malt, Flaked Barley and T.Wheat, the pale malt is underneath out of sight.

6am start tomorrow as usual :!:  Fathers Day on Sunday so I get a lie in \:D/

(btw surely you're not sanitising your mash tun ?)
:?: I leave it sat with a cleaning solution overnight then rinse while the mash liquor comes up to temp, is that a bad thing?

DaaB wrote:Mash tuns don't need sanitising, nothing pre-boil does. A good clean now and then doesn't hurt but generally mine just gets hosed off straight after use.

Giving it a good soak wont hurt though so if it works for you that's fine.
Phew! thought i was dropping ze bollock.

Thats an early start! - Did you get it all prepared last night?

I've had an interesting start, left the tap open on the MT when filling with water (doh!) and had to stop the dog chasing a frog around the kitchen while doughing in! I have absoulutely no idea how it got in :!:
